How to Measure Paver Area

How to measure a paver area
Before estimating paver base, bedding sand, excavation, or other materials, you need the surface area of the project. For a rectangular patio, walkway, or other rectangular section, measure the length and width and multiply the two measurements.
Project area = length × width
If both measurements are entered in feet, the result is square feet.
Measure the length
Measure the project from one end to the other along its longer dimension. Keep the measurement as close as practical to the actual finished edge of the paved area.

Measure the width
Measure across the project perpendicular to the length. For a rectangular area, this gives the second dimension needed to calculate the surface area.

Example: 20 ft by 10 ft paver area
For a rectangular project measuring 20 feet long and 10 feet wide:
20 ft × 10 ft = 200 sq ft
The project area is therefore 200 square feet. The calculator can then use this area together with the selected layer depths to estimate base material, bedding sand, excavation, and related quantities.
What if the project is not a perfect rectangle?
Many patios, walkways, and paved areas are irregular. One practical approach is to divide a complex layout into simpler rectangular sections, calculate the area of each section, and add the areas together.
For example, an L-shaped project can often be divided into two rectangles. Calculate length × width for each rectangle and then add the two results.
Avoid measuring only the longest overall length and widest overall width if doing so includes substantial areas that will not actually be paved, because that can overestimate the project area.
Why accurate measurements matter
The project area is used throughout the material calculation. An incorrect length or width can affect the estimated base volume, bedding sand volume, excavation volume, material weight, number of bags, and estimated cost.
Measure the actual project dimensions before ordering materials rather than relying only on rough plans or visual estimates.
