What a paver base cross section shows

A paver installation is built as a series of layers rather than placing the pavers directly on soil. This cross section shows the relationship between the pavers, bedding sand, compacted aggregate base, and prepared subgrade.

The thickness of each layer affects the overall construction depth and the amount of material required. Use the diagram together with the Paver Base Calculator to visualize the depths entered for your project.

Pavers

The pavers form the finished surface of the patio, walkway, driveway, or other paved area. Paver thickness varies by product, so the calculator uses the thickness you enter rather than assuming every paver is the same size.

Paver thickness is also included when estimating total excavation depth.

Bedding sand

Bedding sand is the thinner layer directly beneath the pavers. Its purpose is different from the structural aggregate base below it.

The Paver Base Calculator calculates bedding sand separately from base material so that a base compaction allowance is not incorrectly applied to the sand layer.

Compacted base

The compacted base is the structural aggregate layer beneath the bedding sand. Its required depth can vary depending on project type, expected load, soil conditions, drainage, climate, aggregate specifications, and installation requirements.

The depth shown in the calculator represents the desired compacted base depth. Because loose aggregate decreases in volume during compaction, the amount of loose material purchased may be greater than the geometric volume of the finished compacted layer.

The calculator therefore keeps the compacted base volume, compaction allowance, and waste allowance separate so you can see how the final material estimate is produced.

Prepared subgrade

The subgrade is the prepared soil or existing ground beneath the aggregate base. The condition of the subgrade can affect the performance of the entire paver installation.

This diagram shows the subgrade as the supporting layer below the base, but it does not determine site-specific soil preparation, drainage, reinforcement, or stabilization requirements.

How deep is the complete paver installation?

For the layers represented by this calculator, the planned excavation depth is calculated as:

Paver thickness + bedding sand depth + compacted base depth = total excavation depth

For example, a project with a 2.375-inch paver, 1 inch of bedding sand, and a 4-inch compacted base has a combined layer depth of 7.375 inches before any additional grading or site-specific requirements are considered.

Why base depth matters

Increasing base depth increases both the amount of aggregate required and the excavation volume. A deeper base can therefore have a significant effect on material quantities, weight, cost, and the amount of soil that must be removed.

There is no single base depth that is correct for every project. A residential patio, pedestrian walkway, and vehicle driveway may require different designs, and local conditions can also affect the appropriate construction.
