Paver base material cost comparison
Paver projects usually require at least two separate bulk materials below the finished pavers: a compacted structural base and a thinner bedding sand layer. Because these materials can have different depths, densities, and supplier prices, their estimated costs can be very different.
This live comparison chart uses the current values from the Paver Base Calculator to show the estimated cost of each material separately.
Base material cost
The base material cost is calculated from the estimated amount of loose base material required after the selected compaction and waste allowances are applied.
The calculator converts that quantity to an estimated weight using the base material density you enter, then multiplies the estimated tons by the selected price per ton.
Base material cost = estimated base tons × base price per ton
Because aggregate density and supplier pricing vary, the result should be treated as a planning estimate.
Bedding sand cost
Bedding sand is calculated separately from the structural base. Its estimated quantity depends on project area, bedding sand depth, sand waste allowance, and the sand density entered in the calculator.
The estimated cost is then calculated as:
Bedding sand cost = estimated sand tons × sand price per ton
The base compaction allowance is not applied to bedding sand in this calculator.
Why compare the costs separately?
Separating the two materials makes the estimate easier to understand and update. If a supplier changes only the base price or sand price, you can update that input and immediately see how it affects the overall material budget.
The comparison also helps show which material represents the larger share of the estimated material cost for the current project.
A longer bar does not mean that material is better or more important. It only represents a larger calculated cost based on the current inputs.
What affects paver base material cost?
The estimated cost can change when you adjust:
- project length or width
- compacted base depth
- bedding sand depth
- compaction allowance
- waste allowance
- material density
- base price per ton
- sand price per ton
This makes the chart useful for comparing project scenarios without changing the underlying calculation method.
Example
If the calculator estimates $120 of base material and $45 of bedding sand, the base-material bar will appear longer because its calculated cost is higher.
