How UIUC GPA is calculated

UIUC GPA is calculated using GPA hours and quality points. Each GPA-bearing course contributes quality points based on its grade-point value and GPA hours.

Quality Points = Grade Points × GPA Hours

After calculating the quality points for all included courses, add them together and divide by total GPA hours:

GPA = Total Quality Points ÷ Total GPA Hours

Example

Suppose a student completes three GPA-bearing courses:

• 3 GPA hours with a B+ at 3.33 grade points = 9.99 quality points
• 4 GPA hours with an A at 4.00 grade points = 16.00 quality points
• 3 GPA hours with a C- at 1.67 grade points = 5.01 quality points

Total quality points = 31.00

Total GPA hours = 10

31.00 ÷ 10 = 3.10 GPA

Why GPA hours matter

A course with more GPA hours has a larger effect on GPA than a course with fewer GPA hours. A 4-hour course therefore contributes more quality points than a 1-hour course with the same letter grade.

Non-GPA courses

Courses or transcript symbols that do not contribute GPA hours or quality points should be excluded rather than treated as an F. Use the calculator's Excluded / Non-GPA option when appropriate.

Transcript-style display

The calculator keeps the underlying calculation separate from the displayed transcript-style result. The displayed GPA uses two decimal places with truncation rather than conventional rounding.
