Base combat is added to the highest combat style contribution, then the final value is rounded down.

How OSRS combat level is calculated

OSRS combat level has two main parts.

The first is the base combat contribution. It uses Defence, Hitpoints, and half of the Prayer level rounded down.

The second is the combat style contribution. The game calculates a melee contribution from Attack and Strength, a ranged contribution from Ranged, and a magic contribution from Magic.

Only the highest of those three combat style values is used.

The base contribution and highest style contribution are added together. The final value is then rounded down to obtain the displayed combat level.

This is why gaining a combat skill level does not always immediately increase the displayed combat level.
