What Determines Your OSRS Combat Level

How the base component and the three offensive components combine into your combat level. Only the highest offensive component is added to the base.

How your OSRS combat level is built

Your combat level is the sum of two parts: a base component and the single highest offensive component.

  • Base component = 0.25 x (Defence + Hitpoints + floor(Prayer / 2)). Defence, Hitpoints, and half your Prayer level always contribute.
  • Melee component = 0.325 x (Attack + Strength).
  • Ranged component = 0.325 x floor(1.5 x Ranged).
  • Magic component = 0.325 x floor(1.5 x Magic).

Only the largest of melee, ranged, and magic is added to the base. The final level is then floored (rounded down).

Why this matters for training

Because only the highest offensive component counts, training the other two styles does not increase your combat level until one of them overtakes your current highest component. A pure account raises combat level efficiently by training a single offensive style plus Hitpoints and Prayer, while keeping Defence low. The standard maximum combat level is 126.
