OSRS Drop Probability Milestones

See how many kills are needed to reach common cumulative drop-chance thresholds for your current drop rate.

Bar chart showing kills needed for 50%, 63.2%, 75%, 90%, 95%, and 99% cumulative chance of an OSRS drop at a 1/512 rate
At exactly one drop-rate cycle (e.g., 512 kills for a 1/512 drop), the chance of at least one drop is only ~63.2%, not 100%.

What the drop probability milestones mean

In Old School RuneScape, a listed drop rate such as 1/512 is a probability on each eligible roll, not a countdown that guarantees the item after 512 kills. Because every roll is independent, the cumulative chance of receiving at least one copy builds up gradually and follows an exponential curve.

Each bar in this chart marks a cumulative probability threshold and the approximate number of independent attempts needed to reach it for a 1/512 drop:

  • 50% — roughly 355 kills. Half of comparable grinds have the drop by here.
  • 63.2% — roughly 512 kills. This is one full drop-rate cycle. Reaching the listed rate only gives about a 63% chance, not certainty.
  • 75% — roughly 710 kills.
  • 90% — roughly 1,178 kills.
  • 95% — roughly 1,533 kills.
  • 99% — roughly 2,356 kills. Even here, about 1 in 100 equivalent grinds is still dry.

How to use it

Enter your drop rate and kill count into the calculator to compute these thresholds for your exact drop. Then compare your current kill count with the bars: the further past a threshold you are while still dry, the more uncommon your dry streak is. Remember that being dry never changes the odds of the next roll — for a standard independent drop, 1/512 stays 1/512 no matter how many attempts have failed.
