"Probability still dry" is the chance you'd still have zero drops at this kill count. "Probability of at least one drop" is the complement — the chance you'd have received it by now.

How OSRS Drop Rate Probability Works

Each kill in Old School RuneScape is an independent random event — your odds of a drop don't improve or worsen based on your recent luck. Dry streak probability is calculated using the same binomial probability math used across probability-based games.

How to Calculate Your Probability of Being Dry

Probability of still being dry after N kills = (1 − 1/drop rate)^N.

OSRS Dry Calculator Formula

  1. Single-Kill Miss Chance = 1 − (1 ÷ Drop Rate)
  2. Probability Still Dry = (Single-Kill Miss Chance) ^ Kill Count × 100
  3. Probability of At Least One Drop = 100 − Probability Still Dry

What Does "Drop Rate" Mean Here?

Enter the denominator of the rate — for a documented 1/512 drop, enter 512. This calculator works for any drop rate; it doesn't maintain a lookup table of specific items, since rates change with game updates.

Drop Rate Probability Examples

Common mid-tier rate: 1/1,000 drop rate, 2,000 kills. Probability still dry = (1 − 1/1000)^2000 × 100 ≈ 13.5%. Probability of at least one drop ≈ 86.5%.

At exactly the drop rate's kill count: 1/512 drop rate, 512 kills — a well-known probability benchmark. Probability of at least one drop ≈ 63.2%, not 100% as intuition might suggest.

Common OSRS Drop Rate Misconceptions

Believing a long dry streak makes a drop "due" — each kill is independent, so past misses don't change future odds (this is sometimes called the gambler's fallacy). Assuming reaching the drop rate's exact kill count guarantees the drop — it only gives roughly 63.2% odds, a widely cited and correct probability result. Assuming all drops use plain binomial odds — OSRS has at least one documented exception (Vorkath's guaranteed 50th-kill head drop) where a hard-coded failsafe overrides pure probability.

How to Use This Calculator

Enter the drop rate as "1 in X" (for example, enter 512 for a 1/512 drop), then enter your current kill count.

Formula & Methodology

Each kill is an independent event. Probability of still being dry after N kills = (1 − 1/rate)^N. Probability of having received the drop at least once = 1 − (1 − 1/rate)^N.

Example: 1/512 drop rate, 1,024 kills

P(dry) = (1 − 1/512)^1024 ≈ 13.5%. P(at least one) ≈ 86.5%.

Assumes a standard, unmodified drop rate with no bad-luck-mitigation mechanic — OSRS does not use pity timers on standard drops (the only known exception is Vorkath's guaranteed 50th-kill head drop). If the specific drop you're tracking has a documented rate-change mechanic (e.g. some newer bosses' invisible-roll systems), this calculator does not model that — use the plain binomial result as a general reference only in those cases.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is OSRS dry streak probability calculated?
Using the binomial probability formula: (1 − 1/drop rate)^kills gives your probability of still being dry after that many kills, since each kill is an independent event.
Does OSRS have pity timers or bad luck protection?
No, not on standard drops — every kill is a fully independent random event. The one documented exception is Vorkath, whose Skeletal Visage head drop is guaranteed on your 50th kill as a hard-coded failsafe, not a probability adjustment.
Why doesn't this have a dropdown of specific items?
Drop rates change with game updates, and this calculator is built to stay accurate regardless — enter the current rate for whatever item you're tracking (check the OSRS Wiki for the latest confirmed rate) rather than relying on a rate table that could go stale.
At the exact drop rate kill count, am I guaranteed the drop?
No — at exactly 1x the drop rate (e.g. 512 kills for a 1/512 item), you only have about a 63.2% chance of having received it. This is a well-known probability result, not a bug or bad luck.
