What Raises Your OSRS Combat Level?

What raises your OSRS combat level?

Not every combat skill affects combat level in exactly the same way.

Defence, Hitpoints, and Prayer contribute to the base part of the formula.

Attack and Strength combine to create the melee contribution. Ranged creates a ranged contribution, while Magic creates a magic contribution.

The game compares melee, ranged, and magic and uses only the highest contribution.

This explains why a level gained in Attack, Strength, Ranged, or Magic may sometimes have no immediate effect on combat level. If that skill does not increase the combat style contribution currently being used, the displayed combat level can remain unchanged.

It is also possible to gain progress toward the next combat level without immediately increasing the displayed whole number.
