Gematria Calculator

Gematria is the ancient practice of assigning numerical values to letters and adding them up to find a word's numerical value. This calculator supports five methods — English Ordinal, Full Reduction, Reverse Ordinal, standard Hebrew gematria, and Greek isopsephy — with a full character-by-character breakdown so you can see exactly how each total was calculated.

The total is the sum of every counted character's value under your selected method. The breakdown table shows each character's individual contribution, so the total is always fully transparent and verifiable by hand.

How Gematria Calculation Works

Gematria assigns a numerical value to each letter in a word or phrase and sums them, using a specific letter-to-number system. Different traditions and methods use different value assignments, which is why the same word can produce different totals under different methods.

How to Calculate a Gematria Value

Each supported character is looked up in your selected method's value table, and the values are summed. The character-by-character breakdown shows exactly how the total was reached.

Gematria Calculator Methods

English Ordinal assigns A-Z the values 1-26. Full Reduction (Pythagorean) repeats a 1-9 cycle across the alphabet. Reverse Ordinal assigns Z-A the values 1-26 in reverse. Hebrew Standard Gematria uses the traditional values Hebrew letters have carried since antiquity (1 through 400). Greek Isopsephy uses the 24 standard modern Greek letters' traditional values (1 through 800).

Why Do Different Methods Give Different Totals?

Because each method uses an entirely different value-assignment system — English Ordinal, Full Reduction, and Reverse Ordinal are modern conventions applied to the Latin alphabet, while Hebrew Standard Gematria reflects the actual historical values Hebrew letters have carried for over two thousand years. They're not different ways of calculating the same thing — they're genuinely different value systems.

Gematria Calculation Examples

English Ordinal: "Hello" = H(8) + E(5) + L(12) + L(12) + O(15) = 52.

Hebrew Standard: חַי (chai, "life") = Chet(8) + Yod(10) = 18 — a widely cited traditional example.

Common Gematria Calculation Mistakes

Comparing totals across different methods as if they should match — a word's English Ordinal value and its Hebrew gematria value (if it were transliterated) are calculated by completely different systems and aren't meant to be equal. Assuming punctuation and spaces are counted — they're excluded from the calculation across all methods. Treating a numerical result as a factual or scientific conclusion — gematria interpretation is a matter of cultural, religious, or esoteric tradition, not an objective prediction.

How to Use This Calculator

Type a word, name, or phrase into the text field, then choose a calculation method from the dropdown. Your total updates instantly, along with a full breakdown showing the value assigned to each character.

Formula & Methodology

Each method maps individual characters to fixed numerical values and sums them. English Ordinal assigns A–Z the values 1–26. Full Reduction (Pythagorean) repeats a 1–9 cycle across the alphabet. Reverse Ordinal assigns Z–A the values 1–26 in reverse. Hebrew Standard Gematria (Mispar Hechrachi) uses the traditional values Hebrew letters have carried since antiquity — 1 through 400 — with final letter forms (sofit) assigned the same value as their ordinary form. Greek Isopsephy uses the 24 standard modern Greek letters' traditional numeral values, 1 through 800.

Example: "Hello" in English Ordinal

H(8) + E(5) + L(12) + L(12) + O(15) = 52.

This calculator implements one specific convention per method, clearly stated in each method's description — other traditions exist for several of these systems (for example, Hebrew's alternate Mispar Gadol final-letter convention, or numerous other Hebrew gematria variants like Mispar Siduri or Mispar Katan) and are not implemented here. Greek Isopsephy supports the 24 standard modern letters only; the 3 archaic numeral letters (digamma, koppa, sampi) used in the full classical system are not supported and will be reported as unsupported characters if entered. Mixed-script input only counts characters belonging to the selected method's alphabet — it never automatically transliterates between scripts.

This calculator performs a deterministic mathematical calculation only. Gematria, isopsephy, and numerology are cultural, religious, and esoteric traditions of interpretation — any meaning attributed to a numerical result is a matter of belief and tradition, not an objective, scientific, or factual conclusion. This tool does not endorse or validate any particular interpretation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a gematria calculator?
A gematria calculator assigns a numerical value to each letter in a word or phrase and adds them together, using one of several traditional letter-to-number systems. This calculator performs that deterministic character-value calculation — it does not interpret or predict anything from the result.
How is gematria calculated?
Each supported character in your text is looked up in the selected method's value table, and the values are summed. The character-by-character breakdown below the result shows exactly how the total was reached.
What is the difference between Hebrew gematria and English gematria methods?
Hebrew gematria (Mispar Hechrachi) uses the traditional numerical values Hebrew letters have carried since antiquity (1 through 400). The English methods here — Ordinal, Full Reduction, and Reverse Ordinal — are modern conventions applying numbers to the Latin alphabet; they are not part of traditional Jewish gematria and carry no equivalent historical or religious standing.
What is Full Reduction (Pythagorean) gematria?
A method that assigns each letter a value from 1 to 9, repeating the cycle across the alphabet (A=1, J=1, S=1, and so on) — commonly associated with Pythagorean numerology rather than Hebrew tradition.
What is Reverse Ordinal?
The mirror image of English Ordinal — Z=1 counting backward, so A=26, B=25, and so on down to Z=1.
How are Hebrew final letters (sofit) handled?
This calculator uses the standard convention (Mispar Hechrachi), where final forms — ך (kaf), ם (mem), ן (nun), ף (pe), and ץ (tsadi) — take the exact same value as their ordinary form. An alternate tradition (Mispar Gadol) assigns final letters extended values from 500–900 instead; that alternate convention is not implemented here. See the methodology section for the full explanation.
Are spaces and punctuation counted?
No — whitespace and punctuation are excluded from the calculation and are not counted as unsupported characters. Hebrew niqqud (vowel points) and Greek accent marks are handled the same way: removed before calculating, since traditional gematria counts consonant letters only.
Can I enter a full phrase instead of a single word?
Yes — enter any word, name, or phrase up to 1,000 characters. Spaces between words don't affect the total.
Why do different gematria calculators show different results for the same word?
Different tools sometimes implement different conventions — for example, whether Hebrew final letters use standard or extended values, or which English letter-value system is used. Always check which specific method a calculator uses before comparing results across tools.
Is Greek isopsephy the same thing as Hebrew gematria?
They're related but distinct practices: isopsephy is the Greek-language tradition (used, for example, in early Christian and classical Greek numerology), while gematria specifically refers to the Hebrew tradition. This calculator implements the 24 standard modern Greek letters; the 3 archaic numeral letters used in the full classical 27-symbol system (digamma, koppa, sampi) are not supported and are reported as unsupported characters if entered.
Does this calculator make predictions or reveal hidden meanings?
No. This tool performs a deterministic mathematical calculation only. Any interpretation of gematria values as meaningful, prophetic, or spiritually significant is a matter of cultural, religious, or esoteric tradition and personal belief — not a factual or scientific conclusion this calculator makes or endorses.
