Formula: V = π × r² × h

Where r = radius (diameter ÷ 2) and h = height

Example: Cylindrical tank, diameter = 4 ft, height = 6 ft: - Radius = 4 ÷ 2 = 2 ft - V = π × 2² × 6 = π × 4 × 6 = 75.40 cubic feet - To convert to gallons: 75.40 × 7.48 = 564 gallons

Rectangular (Box) Tank Volume

Above-ground plastic storage tanks, aquariums, or square concrete tanks.

Formula: V = L × W × H

Example: Tank 4 ft long × 2 ft wide × 3 ft deep: - V = 4 × 2 × 3 = 24 cubic feet = 179.5 gallons

Horizontal Cylindrical Tank Volume

Fuel tanks, propane storage, and many industrial tanks lie on their sides.

Full volume: V = π × r² × L (same as vertical, using length instead of height)

Partial fill (liquid depth d): More complex — requires the cross-sectional area of a circular segment:

V = L × [r² × arccos((r−d)/r) − (r−d) × √(2rd − d²)]
