Calculating a term GPA

Multiply each course's credits by its grade value. Add all grade points and divide by the total credits carrying GPA value.

Projecting cumulative GPA

Use the institutional GPA and GPA credits shown in Hokie SPA. Multiply them to estimate current grade points, add the new term, and divide by combined GPA credits.

Do not use total earned credits when those totals include transfer, pass/fail, withdrawal, audit, or other credits excluded from GPA.

Repeated courses

Virginia Tech generally includes repeated graded attempts in GPA. A repeat after a C or better may be converted to a non-GPA repeat notation under the applicable policy.

Use the official cumulative totals whenever repeat treatment has already been applied.

Coursework excluded from GPA

P, S, W, X, and unresolved I grades do not enter the normal GPA. NG is treated as F for GPA purposes.

Do not enter excluded coursework as a zero-point failing grade because that would incorrectly add credits to the denominator.

Common mistakes

  • Using a generic grade scale instead of the university's scale.
  • Including transfer or non-GPA credits.
  • Removing an earlier repeat before an official adjustment.
  • Treating pass/fail or withdrawal as a failing grade.
  • Assuming this estimate determines academic standing or graduation eligibility.
