How to Calculate Baseboard Trim Needed
Baseboard is sold by the linear foot or as individual lengths (typically 8-foot or 16-foot boards). The calculation is straightforward:
Step 1: Measure the room perimeter For a rectangular room: Perimeter = 2 × (Length + Width)
Example: A 12 ft × 15 ft bedroom: 2 × (12 + 15) = 54 linear feet
Step 2: Subtract doorway widths Each door opening eliminates one section of baseboard. A standard interior door is 32–36 inches wide; exterior doors are typically 36 inches. Subtract the door width (in feet) from the perimeter.
Example: 54 ft − 3 ft (one door) = 51 linear feet
Step 3: Add waste allowance Add 5–15% depending on room complexity: - Simple rectangular room, few corners: 5–8% - Multiple inside corners, bay windows, odd angles: 10–15% - Stained or painted wood where grain matching matters: 15–20%
Example: 51 × 1.10 = 56.1 linear feet, round up to 57 linear feet
Step 4: Convert to board count Divide total linear feet by board length. Standard lengths: - 8-foot boards: 57 ÷ 8 = 7.125 → order 8 boards - 16-foot boards: 57 ÷ 16 = 3.56 → order 4 boards

It outputs the net linear footage needed and (if a standard board length is entered) the piece count to order.
For L-shaped, irregular, or multi-room jobs, measure each wall segment individually and add them. Don't rely on perimeter calculations for non-rectangular rooms.
Inside Corners vs. Outside Corners
Inside corners (90°, concave): Where two walls meet inward. Baseboard pieces are typically coped (cut with a coping saw to fit against the profile of the adjacent piece) or mitered at 45°. Inside corners require no additional material length beyond what the perimeter formula gives.
Outside corners (90°, convex): Where a wall juts outward (common at bay windows, knee walls, and columns). Each outside corner requires two pieces mitered at 45° that extend slightly beyond the corner to form the joint. Add 3–6 inches of extra material per outside corner to account for the longer cut.
Stagger Joints in Long Runs
For walls longer than your available board lengths, you'll need spliced joints. Place these joints: - Not at stud locations — studs can cause the joint to open as the wall moves - Staggered if you have multiple long walls, so joints don't line up in the same spot on adjacent walls - In low-visibility areas — behind doors, in corners, wherever they'll be least noticeable

Common baseboard height choices:
Taller ceilings visually "need" taller baseboard to maintain proportionality. Using 3-inch baseboard in a 12-foot-ceiling room looks undersized regardless of how well it's installed.
Common Mistakes
Measuring only the "open" wall lengths instead of the full perimeter. You'll run baseboard along all walls, including behind doors when they're open — measure the full perimeter minus the door opening width, not the visible wall sections.
Forgetting to add waste. Even simple rooms produce off-cuts at corners that can't be reused. 10% waste is rarely wasted — it's usually used.
Ordering 8-foot boards for a 9-foot wall. You'll need two pieces with a joint. Order 10-foot lengths if your supplier stocks them, or use a 16-foot board cut to length.
