Weight per foot (lbs/ft) = (OD − Wall Thickness) × Wall Thickness × 10.68

This is derived from: W = π × (OD − t) × t × density_per_foot

Where: - OD = outside diameter in inches - t = wall thickness in inches - 10.68 = derived constant (steel density in lbs/in³ × π × 12 in/ft)

Total weight: W_total = Weight per foot × Total length (ft)

Worked Example: 4-inch Schedule 40 Pipe

NPS 4 (Nominal Pipe Size 4): - OD = 4.500 inches (NPS OD is standardized, NOT the nominal size) - Schedule 40 wall thickness = 0.237 inches

Weight per foot = (4.500 − 0.237) × 0.237 × 10.68 = 4.263 × 0.237 × 10.68 = 4.263 × 2.531 = 10.79 lbs/ft

This matches the API 5L published value of 10.79 lbs/ft for 4-inch Schedule 40.

API 5L and ASME B36.10 Standards

Above NPS 14, the OD happens to equal the NPS number in inches — but smaller sizes have no obvious relationship between NPS and OD.

6-inch Schedule 40 weighs 18.97 lbs/ft. For 100 feet: 18.97 × 100 = 1,897 lbs (approximately 860 kg).
