The Pond Liner Size Formula

Pond liner dimensions are calculated by adding the pond's dimensions to account for the liner folding down the sides and across the bottom:

Liner Length = Pond Length + (2 × Maximum Depth) + Overlap

Liner Width = Pond Width + (2 × Maximum Depth) + Overlap

Overlap (underlap): Add at least 2 feet (24 inches) per side so the liner extends beyond the pond's edge to be secured and hidden under rocks, turf, or coping. Most installers use 2–3 feet of overlap.

Example: A pond 10 ft long × 6 ft wide × 2 ft deep, with 2 ft of overlap per side:

  • Liner length: 10 + (2 × 2) + (2 × 2) = 10 + 4 + 4 = 18 ft
  • Liner width: 6 + (2 × 2) + (2 × 2) = 6 + 4 + 4 = 14 ft

Order an 18 × 14 ft liner, not a 10 × 6 ft liner.

EPDM (45-mil) is the most widely recommended choice for garden ponds. It stretches and conforms to irregular shapes without stress cracks, remains flexible in cold temperatures, and is fish-safe when it carries the "fish-safe" certification.

PVC is cheaper but becomes brittle in UV exposure and cold temperatures, reducing its working life significantly in northern climates.

Underlayment

Always install an underlayment beneath the liner. Underlayment protects the liner from rocks, roots, and sharp objects in the soil that can puncture the liner from below over time.

Options: - Pond underlayment fabric (purpose-made): 150–300 gsm non-woven geotextile - Sand layer (2–4 inches): effective but shifts on slopes - Old carpet: a temporary solution; degrades and can promote bacteria

Underlayment does not go into the liner size calculation — calculate liner size based on the pond's finished dimensions.

Installing Around Irregular Shapes

For natural kidney, figure-eight, or freeform shapes:

  1. At the widest point, measure the maximum straight-line length and width
  2. Apply the formula using those maximum dimensions
  3. The excess liner at narrower sections gets folded and pleated into neat creases

There is no liner shape for irregular ponds — you buy a rectangle and fold it. Buy the rectangle that encloses your shape at its widest dimensions.

Worked Example

Kidney pond: 14 ft at its longest, 9 ft at its widest, 3 ft deep, 2.5 ft overlap:

  • Liner length: 14 + (2 × 3) + (2 × 2.5) = 14 + 6 + 5 = 25 ft
  • Liner width: 9 + (2 × 3) + (2 × 2.5) = 9 + 6 + 5 = 20 ft

Order a 25 × 20 ft EPDM liner (commercial sizes are typically in 5-foot increments; a 25 × 20 ft is a standard size).

Common Mistakes

Measuring the pond's surface instead of the outline dimensions. If your pond has shelves or different depth zones, the liner still needs to cover the full perimeter — use the total length and width at surface level.

Not accounting for both sides. The formula adds depth twice per direction — once for each side of the pond. Forgetting this and adding depth only once leads to a liner that won't reach the far edge.

Using too little overlap. 1-foot overlap works mathematically but leaves almost nothing to secure under edging stones. Use 2–3 feet per side minimum.

Buying PVC in cold climates. Standard PVC becomes rigid and crack-prone below freezing. EPDM retains flexibility down to −40°F.
