How Many Recessed Lights Do You Need?

The most common planning rule is one recessed light per 4–6 square feet of ceiling area for general ambient lighting. A 300 sq ft living room therefore needs roughly 50–75 fixtures under this guideline — which is clearly too many. The rule applies to the lit *zone*, not the entire room, and works best as a starting point before adjusting for ceiling height and lumen output.

A more precise method:

  1. Determine the foot-candles you want (see table below)
  2. Multiply room area × foot-candles = total lumens needed
  3. Divide by lumens per fixture to get fixture count

Worked example: A 200 sq ft living room at 15 foot-candles needs 3,000 lumens total. At 750 lumens per fixture, that's 4 fixtures — far less than the "1 per 4 sq ft" shortcut suggests.

Spacing Formula Based on Ceiling Height

The standard spacing rule: center-to-center distance = 0.8 × ceiling height.

Wall offset: place the first fixture 2–3 feet from walls to avoid harsh shadows on vertical surfaces and to illuminate artwork or cabinetry evenly.

Fixture Size: 4-Inch vs 6-Inch

  • 4-inch fixtures suit bathrooms, hallways, and kitchens with lower ceilings or accent lighting. They focus light into a narrower cone.
  • 6-inch fixtures are standard for living areas and bedrooms. They cast a wider spread and work at typical 8–10 ft ceiling heights.
  • High-ceiling rooms (12+ ft) often need 8-inch commercial fixtures to maintain adequate foot-candle levels without an excessive number of fixtures.

IC Rating and NEC Requirements

Per NEC Section 410.16, any recessed luminaire installed in a ceiling with thermal insulation must be IC-rated (insulation contact rated). Installing a non-IC-rated fixture in an insulated ceiling is a fire hazard and a code violation.

If you're in an existing home with blown-in insulation in the ceiling cavity, verify the IC rating before buying fixtures. Most modern LED recessed fixtures are IC-rated, but confirm it on the label.

Common Planning Mistakes

Using "square feet per fixture" without adjusting for lumens. A 4-inch 5W fixture and a 6-inch 15W fixture cover very different areas even though both are called "recessed lights."

Ignoring wall offsets. Fixtures placed too close to walls create uneven light pooling and harsh shadows. The 2–3 ft wall offset is standard practice, not a suggestion.

Planning for one circuit. The NEC limits lighting circuits to 80% of their amperage rating. A 15-amp lighting circuit can carry 1,800 watts continuously (15A × 120V × 0.8). At 10W per fixture, that's 180 fixtures per circuit — enough for most rooms. However, running many fixtures on a single switch creates dimming issues; split large rooms across two circuits.

Forgetting the dimmer. Most recessed LED fixtures require a compatible LED dimmer — not a standard incandescent dimmer — to avoid buzzing, flickering, or premature bulb failure.
