How to Use This Calculator

Choose Equal Split if everyone is dividing the entire check evenly. Choose Itemized Share if you want to pay only for what you ordered plus your share of shared items. Enter the restaurant subtotal, number of people, sales tax rate, tip percentage, and your item amounts where applicable. The calculator will show your food share, allocated tax, tip, and final amount owed.

Formula & Methodology

For an equal split, the bill subtotal is divided by the number of people. For an itemized split, your pre-tax share equals the cost of your own items plus your allocated portion of shared items. Tax is applied to your calculated taxable share. Tip can be calculated on either the pre-tax share or the after-tax share, depending on the selected tip basis. Final Amount Owed = Food Share + Allocated Tax + Tip.

Example: Your Items + Shared Appetizer + Tax + Tip

Suppose the restaurant subtotal is $120. You ordered $32 of food and drinks, and there is a $24 shared appetizer split among 4 people. Your pre-tax share is $38. With 8.25% sales tax, your allocated tax is $3.14. If you leave a 20% tip on the pre-tax amount, your tip is $7.60, giving a total share of approximately $48.74.

This calculator assumes the sales tax rate applies uniformly to the taxable portion of the bill. Some jurisdictions tax food, alcohol, service charges, or other items differently. Automatic gratuities, coupons, discounts, service fees, delivery fees, credits, and individually taxed items may require manual adjustment. Shared items are divided equally among the number of people entered for shared items.

For personal budgeting and bill-splitting purposes only. Verify the restaurant receipt, tax treatment, automatic gratuity, service charges, discounts, and tip policy before paying.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate my share of a restaurant bill with tax and tip?
Add the cost of the items you ordered and your portion of any shared items. Calculate tax on that amount, then add your chosen tip. This calculator performs each step automatically.
How do you split a restaurant bill when people ordered different amounts?
Use the Itemized Share mode. Enter the cost of your own items separately from shared items so you pay tax and tip based on your actual share instead of dividing the entire bill evenly.
How do I split tax on a restaurant bill?
If everyone is paying according to what they ordered, a simple method is to apply the same sales tax rate to each person's taxable subtotal. This calculator automatically calculates the tax on your share.
Should tip be calculated before or after tax?
Practices vary. Many people calculate gratuity from the pre-tax subtotal, while others tip on the after-tax total. This calculator lets you choose either method.
How do I split shared appetizers or bottles of wine?
Enter the total cost of the shared items and the number of people sharing them. The calculator divides that amount equally and adds your portion to your personal items.
Can I split the entire check evenly?
Yes. Choose Equal Split and enter the total restaurant subtotal and number of people. Your food share, tax, and tip will be divided accordingly.
Can I use this when the restaurant refuses to split the check?
Yes. The calculator is designed for situations where one person pays the restaurant and everyone else needs to determine how much to reimburse.
Does this calculator include tax and tip?
Yes. Tax and tip are calculated separately and included in the final amount owed.
Can I calculate an uneven bill split?
Yes. The Itemized Share mode calculates your contribution from your own purchases rather than simply dividing the entire check by the number of diners.
What if there is already an automatic gratuity?
If gratuity is already included on the restaurant receipt, avoid adding it again. You can set the additional tip percentage to 0% or manually account for any extra tip you want to leave.
