The desired annual income entered is a PRE-TAX target, not a take-home-pay target — this calculator does not compute your actual income or self-employment tax liability. The optional tax reserve percentage is a simple planning buffer only.

How to Set Your Freelance Hourly Rate

Similar to consulting rate-setting, your freelance rate needs to cover your target income, a tax reserve, and realistic utilization — the percentage of your available hours you actually bill clients for.

How to Calculate Your Freelance Rate

Rate = Required Revenue ÷ (Working Weeks × Hours per Week × Utilization %), where Required Revenue already accounts for your tax reserve.

Freelance Rate Calculator Formula

  1. Working Weeks = 52 − Unpaid Weeks Off
  2. Required Revenue = Target Income ÷ (1 − Tax Reserve %)
  3. Hourly Rate = Required Revenue ÷ (Working Weeks × Hours per Week × Utilization %)

What Utilization Rate Should Freelancers Use?

50-70% is common for freelancers who also spend meaningful time on marketing, proposals, and administrative work — full-time freelancers rarely bill anywhere close to 100% of their available hours.

Freelance Rate Setting Examples

Part-time freelance alongside other work: a freelancer targeting a modest supplemental income with limited weekly hours needs a notably higher hourly rate than a full-time freelancer targeting the same total income over more hours — this calculator's utilization and hours-per-week fields let you model either scenario.

Common Freelance Rate Mistakes

Undercutting rates to win clients without accounting for the tax reserve and low utilization built into a sustainable number — a rate that looks competitive can be unsustainable once real costs are factored in. Not revisiting your rate as your skills and demand grow. Quoting hourly when a project-based quote might better protect against scope creep on more complex engagements.

How to Use This Calculator

Enter your desired annual income (before taxes), business expenses and subscriptions, insurance and savings goals, working pattern, and desired margin.

Formula & Methodology

Your income target, insurance, and retirement savings goal are combined with business expenses and an optional tax reserve buffer, then your profit margin is added. Unpaid time off reduces your effective working weeks; utilization determines how many of your remaining hours are billable.

Example: $70,000 pre-tax income target, $4,000 expenses, 65% utilization

With $4,000 expenses, $3,000 insurance, and a 20% tax reserve buffer, required revenue with a 15% margin ≈ $101,000. At 35 hours/week and 65% utilization over ~48 working weeks (after 20 days unpaid time off), billable hours ≈ 1,092/year — a recommended rate of about $92/hour, or $736/day.

The income target is pre-tax; this calculator does not calculate actual federal, state, self-employment, or local tax liability. The optional tax reserve percentage is a simple estimate buffer, not a tax calculation. For precise tax planning, use the 1099 vs W-2 or 1099 Hourly Rate calculators (which model actual self-employment tax) or consult a tax professional.

This calculator is for general educational estimation only and is not tax, legal, or financial advice. The income target is pre-tax and the tax reserve field is a simple planning buffer, not a calculated liability. Consult a qualified accountant before setting your actual freelance rates.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the income target pre-tax or take-home?
Pre-tax. This calculator does not compute your actual tax liability, so entering a take-home target would understate the rate you actually need.
How is this different from the consulting rate calculator?
This calculator is oriented toward individual freelancer income replacement with simpler expense categories. The consulting rate calculator models a more formal business structure with explicit overhead tracking, better suited to established consultants.
What's the tax reserve percentage for?
An optional, simple planning buffer — a rough percentage set aside for taxes. It's not a calculated tax liability. For an actual self-employment tax calculation, use the 1099 vs W-2 or 1099 Hourly Rate calculators.
How is the day rate calculated?
Your recommended hourly rate multiplied by your entered hours-per-day figure.
Does unpaid time off affect my rate?
Yes — vacation, sick days, and holidays you don't get paid for reduce your effective working weeks, which reduces total billable hours and increases the rate needed to hit your income goal.
