What "Percent" Means
"Percent" comes from Latin per centum — "per hundred." A percentage is a proportion expressed out of 100.
- 50% = 50 out of 100 = 0.50 = 1/2
- 25% = 25 out of 100 = 0.25 = 1/4
- 1% = 1 out of 100 = 0.01 = 1/100
To convert a percentage to a decimal: divide by 100. To convert a decimal to a percentage: multiply by 100.
The Three Types of Percentage Questions
Type 1: What is X% of a number? Answer = Number × (X ÷ 100) Example: What is 35% of 240? → 240 × 0.35 = 84
Type 2: What percentage is X of Y? Answer = (X ÷ Y) × 100 Example: What percentage is 18 of 72? → (18 ÷ 72) × 100 = 25%
Type 3: X is Y% of what number? Answer = X ÷ (Y ÷ 100) Example: 42 is 30% of what? → 42 ÷ 0.30 = 140
Percentage Increase and Decrease
Percentage Increase: When a value grows from A to B: % Increase = (B − A) ÷ A × 100
Example: Price rises from $80 to $92: % Increase = (92 − 80) ÷ 80 × 100 = 12 ÷ 80 × 100 = 15%
Percentage Decrease: When a value falls from A to B: % Decrease = (A − B) ÷ A × 100
Example: Temperature drops from 90°F to 75°F: % Decrease = (90 − 75) ÷ 90 × 100 = 15 ÷ 90 × 100 = 16.7%
Percentage Points vs. Percentages
These are different:
If an interest rate rises from 3% to 5%, it increased by 2 percentage points (absolute change). But it increased by (5−3)/3 × 100 = 66.7% (relative change).
Journalists and politicians often blur this distinction. "Interest rates rose 2%" is ambiguous — 2 percentage points (from 3% to 5%) or 2% of 3% (from 3% to 3.06%)? Always clarify whether the change is in percentage points or percent.
Common Real-World Percentage Calculations
Sales tax: $150 item + 8.5% tax = $150 × 1.085 = $162.75
Discount: $200 item at 30% off = $200 × (1 − 0.30) = $200 × 0.70 = $140
Tip: $65 restaurant bill, 20% tip = $65 × 0.20 = $13 tip → $78 total
Interest (simple): $5,000 loan at 6% for 1 year = $5,000 × 0.06 = $300 interest
Commission: $85,000 home sale at 3% = $85,000 × 0.03 = $2,550 commission
