How to Use This Calculator
Enter the starting value and ending value. The starting value must be greater than zero.
Formula & Methodology
Absolute Change = New Value − Old Value. Percentage Change = ((New Value − Old Value) ÷ Old Value) × 100.
Examples of positive and negative change
From 80 to 100, the percentage change is +25%. From 100 to 80, the percentage change is −20%.
The old value must be greater than zero. Use Percentage Difference when neither value is an original or reference value.
This calculator provides a directional mathematical comparison. Confirm that the first input is genuinely the reference value.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What is the percentage change formula?
- Percentage change is ((New − Old) ÷ Old) × 100.
- What does a negative percentage change mean?
- It means the new value is lower than the original value.
- What is the difference between percentage change and percentage difference?
- Percentage change is directional and uses the old value as the base. Percentage difference is symmetric and uses the average of both values.
- Why can reversing the values produce a different percentage?
- Swapping the values changes the denominator. Percentage change is measured relative to the original value, so direction matters.
