The Boone & Crockett Club (B&C) has measured and scored North American big game since 1906. The B&C score is the most widely recognized method for comparing whitetail deer, mule deer, elk, and other antlered game.

- What is a good Boone & Crockett score for a whitetail deer?
- A typical whitetail scoring 125–149 inches (B&C gross) is an excellent, mature buck that most hunters would be proud to harvest. At 150–169 inches, you're looking at a state-class trophy that may make regional or state record books. At 170–199 inches (net after deductions), you're looking at a deer that would qualify for Pope & Young archery records and represents a once-in-a-lifetime caliber buck in most of the country. Hitting the 200-inch threshold for typical whitetail is extraordinarily rare — fewer than a few hundred confirmed 200-inch typical whitetails exist in the Boone & Crockett record books.
- How do I measure main beam length for B&C scoring?
- Main beam length is measured along the outside edge of the main beam, from the base (where it emerges from the skull, at the burr) to the tip of the main beam. The tape measure follows the curvature of the beam, not a straight-line distance. Use a flexible steel tape (not cloth, which stretches) and press it firmly against the outer edge of the beam. Don't include any abnormal points or stickers — those are measured separately in non-typical categories. For official scoring, a B&C or SCI official measurer uses a 1/4-inch wide steel cable cable that follows the beam precisely.
- Does inside spread count toward the full B&C score?
- Yes — inside spread (the widest inside measurement between the main beams) is added to the score, but is capped at the length of the longer main beam. If the inside spread is 20 inches but the main beam is 25 inches, the full 20 inches counts. If the inside spread is 28 inches but the longest main beam is only 24 inches, only 24 inches counts for inside spread credit. This prevents deer with extremely wide, splayed racks from getting disproportionate credit for width alone. Inside spread is one of the most visible antler attributes but represents only 10–15% of a typical deer's total score.
- What is the difference between gross and net B&C score?
- Gross score is the sum of all measurements before any symmetry deductions. Net score subtracts the differences between matching measurements on the left and right antlers. A 10-inch G2 on the right and 7-inch G2 on the left: the 3-inch difference is subtracted from gross score. Net score is the official B&C score used for record book entry. A typical whitetail might gross 170 inches but net only 155 inches after 15 inches of deductions for asymmetry. Symmetrical, 'typical' racks have minimal deductions; asymmetric racks may lose 10–30+ inches from gross to net.
