Undersizing leaves a room persistently uncomfortable and stresses the equipment. Manual J: The Accurate Method for HVAC Sizing

For whole-home HVAC systems, the industry standard is Manual J (developed by ACCA — Air Conditioning Contractors of America). Manual J accounts for:

Common Sizing Mistakes

Adding square footages from different floors. Floors have different heat loads — calculate each level separately.

Ignoring ceiling height. A room with 10-foot ceilings has 25% more volume than the same square footage with 8-foot ceilings, and proportionally more air to condition.

Oversizing to feel safer. Bigger is not better for AC. An oversized unit short-cycles, fails to dehumidify, and wears out faster than a properly sized unit running longer cycles.
