Does Protein Timing Matter?

Research suggests protein synthesis is maximized by:

  1. Spreading intake across 3–5 meals with 0.4 g/kg protein per meal (rather than eating most protein in one sitting). Leucine threshold (~2–3 g leucine per meal) is key — below this, muscle protein synthesis isn't maximally stimulated.
  1. Post-workout protein within 2 hours of resistance training. The "anabolic window" is wider than once thought, but consuming 20–40 g protein post-workout remains a useful practice.

Can You Eat Too Much Protein?

Protein intakes up to 2.5 g/kg bodyweight appear safe for healthy adults with normal kidney function (Antonio et al., 2016). Claims that high protein causes kidney damage in healthy individuals are not supported by current evidence — the concern applies to those with pre-existing kidney disease.
