The Three Pace Calculations
Pace from distance and time: Pace (min/mile) = Total Time (minutes) ÷ Distance (miles)
Total time from pace and distance: Time = Pace × Distance
Speed from pace: Speed (mph) = 60 ÷ Pace (min/mile)
Worked Examples
Example 1: You run a 5K in 28:30 (28 minutes, 30 seconds = 28.5 minutes) - 5K = 3.107 miles - Pace = 28.5 ÷ 3.107 = 9:10 per mile (or 5:42 per km) - Speed = 60 ÷ 9.17 = 6.5 mph
Example 2: You want to run a sub-4:00 marathon - Marathon = 26.219 miles - Required pace: 240 minutes ÷ 26.219 = 9:09 per mile (5:41/km)

Training Paces by Zone
Most training runs should NOT be at race pace. Effective endurance training uses different pace zones:
Example: A runner with a 10K pace of 8:30/mile should run: - Easy runs: 10:00–10:30/mile - Long runs: 9:30–10:15/mile - Tempo runs: 8:45–9:00/mile
Adjusting for Heat and Altitude
Heat (above 60°F/15°C): Add approximately 10–30 seconds/mile per 10°F increase above 60°F. A 9:00 pace at 60°F becomes ~9:30 at 80°F.
Altitude (above 5,000 ft / 1,500 m): Expect 1.5–3% slower pace per 1,000 ft gain above sea level. At 8,000 ft (Denver area), paces are 4–6% slower than sea level until acclimated (1–3 weeks of acclimatization).

- Pace (min/mile) = Total Time in Minutes ÷ Distance in Miles. Example: 45 minutes for 5 miles = 9:00 per mile. For min/km: divide total minutes by distance in km. Convert seconds to decimal (30 sec = 0.5 min) before dividing.
- What is a good running pace for a beginner?
- A comfortable conversational pace varies by fitness level. Most beginners are comfortable at 10–14 min/mile. 'Good' pace is relative — focusing on effort level (able to speak in full sentences) matters more than a specific speed. A 12:00 mile run consistently is far better than no running at all.
- How do I convert running pace to miles per hour?
- mph = 60 ÷ pace in min/mile. A 9:00/mile pace = 60 ÷ 9 = 6.67 mph. An 8:00/mile pace = 7.5 mph. A 6:00/mile pace = 10 mph.
- What pace should I train at to improve?
- Most training runs (70–80% of volume) should be at an easy pace — conversational, about 1–2 minutes per mile slower than your 10K race pace. Going too fast on easy days is the most common training mistake. Reserve hard effort for structured workouts (tempo, intervals) 1–2 times per week.
- How do I calculate my marathon pace?
- Marathon pace (min/mile) = Target finish time (minutes) ÷ 26.219 miles. For a 4:00 marathon: 240 ÷ 26.219 = 9:09/mile. For a 3:30 marathon: 210 ÷ 26.219 = 8:01/mile. Train your long runs at a pace 1–2 min/mile slower than goal marathon pace.
