What Is Swing Weight?
Swing weight measures how heavy a racket, club, or bat feels during the swing — specifically, the resistance to rotation around a pivot point. It is NOT the same as static weight; two rackets can weigh identically but have very different swing weights based on where the mass is distributed.
A racket with more head-heavy mass has higher swing weight (harder to swing) but more power. A handle-heavy racket has lower swing weight (easier to swing) and more control.
The Physics: Moment of Inertia
Swing weight is fundamentally the moment of inertia (MOI) — the rotational equivalent of mass:
I = Σ(m × r²)
Where each small piece of mass (m) is multiplied by the square of its distance from the pivot point (r). Because r is squared, mass far from the pivot (in the head) contributes far more to swing weight than mass near the pivot.
Tennis Racket Swing Weight
Tennis swing weight is measured on a specialized scale (Babolat Racket Diagnostic Center or similar) that spins the racket around a fixed pivot 10 cm from the butt cap.
Typical tennis swing weight ranges:
Standard racket pivot: 10 cm (3.94 inches) from butt cap
Golf Club Swing Weight
Golf uses a letter-number scale (A0–G10, where A is lightest and G heaviest). D0 is considered "standard" for most clubs.
Golf swing weight scale:
Effect of adding weight: Each 2 grams added to the clubhead raises swing weight by approximately 1 swing weight unit. Adding 14g of grip weight reduces swing weight by ~1 unit (because grip weight moves mass closer to the pivot handle end).
Adjusting Swing Weight
To increase swing weight: - Add lead tape to racket head or club head - Remove weight from handle (hollow butt cap, thinner grip)
To decrease swing weight: - Add weight to handle (lead tape under grip) - Replace heavy strings with lighter strings (tennis) - Use lighter head components
Rough tennis rule: Adding 1 gram to the hoop adds approximately 3–4 swing weight points; adding 1 gram to the handle subtracts approximately 1 swing weight point.
Baseball Bat Swing Weight
Baseball uses the "drop" system: Drop = Length (inches) − Weight (oz) - Drop -3: Heavy, adult wood bats (33 in/30 oz) - Drop -5 to -8: Youth big barrel - Drop -10: Standard youth - Drop -13.5: Lightweight youth
A lighter swing weight (higher drop number) improves bat speed; a heavier swing weight (lower drop) improves power transfer on contact.
