How to Use This Calculator
Choose whether you are tracking alkalinity or calcium. For a correction dose, enter the current level and target level. For the maintenance estimate, enter a higher starting measurement, a later ending measurement, and the number of days between those tests. Then enter the supplement's reference dose and the parameter increase that dose produces in the stated reference water volume. The calculator will return a one-time correction amount and a separate estimated daily maintenance amount.
Formula & Methodology
Correction dose and maintenance dose solve different problems. The correction dose is based on the difference between the current parameter level and the desired target. Daily maintenance is based on measured consumption over time: Daily Consumption = (Starting Measurement − Ending Measurement) ÷ Days Measured. Both values are converted into supplement volume using the entered product reference, such as a specified number of milliliters that raises alkalinity by a certain dKH or calcium by a certain ppm in a known water volume. The maintenance dose replaces estimated daily consumption; it is not the same as the one-time correction dose.
Example: Correction First, Then Daily Maintenance
Suppose alkalinity is currently 7.4 dKH and the target is 8.0 dKH. The 0.6 dKH difference is used to estimate a one-time correction dose. After the tank reaches the target, suppose alkalinity later falls from 8.0 to 7.4 dKH over 3 days without corrective additions. Average consumption is 0.2 dKH per day. The supplement amount needed to replace 0.2 dKH becomes the estimated daily maintenance dose. The correction amount should not automatically be repeated every day.
This calculator depends on the accuracy of the measurements and the supplement concentration entered by the user. Actual aquarium response can differ because of test error, salinity, water changes, precipitation, dosing timing, changing coral demand, product preparation, biological uptake, and other chemistry. Daily consumption may change after the parameter level itself changes. The calculator does not determine whether supplementation is actually necessary and does not replace manufacturer instructions or repeated testing.

- Why can my daily dose change over time?
- Coral growth, calcification, livestock changes, lighting, nutrients, pH, water chemistry, and other factors can change aquarium demand. Recalculate or adjust the maintenance dose when measured consumption changes.
- Should I use nominal tank size or actual water volume?
- Use the best estimate of actual system water volume after accounting for rock, sand, sump level, equipment, and displacement. Nominal aquarium size may overestimate the water volume and therefore the dose.
- Can this calculator work with different reef supplements?
- Yes, if the product provides a usable reference, such as how many milliliters raise the selected parameter by a stated amount in a known volume of water. Enter those reference values directly rather than assuming all products have the same concentration.
- Why might a calculator show a large dose such as 87.5 ml?
- A large calculated amount may be the total one-time amount required to move from the current value to a target, not the amount intended for daily use. Correction and maintenance doses should be interpreted separately.
- Do I still need to test after calculating a maintenance dose?
- Yes. The estimated maintenance dose should be verified by repeated testing because actual consumption can change and calculated supplement concentrations may not perfectly match real aquarium conditions.
