How to Estimate Asphalt for Your Driveway
Asphalt (hot mix asphalt, or "bitumen" in some regions) is estimated by the ton, based on your paved area and how thick you want the compacted layer. Residential driveways typically use 2-3 inches of compacted asphalt; heavier vehicles need 4-6 inches.
How to Calculate Asphalt Tonnage
Tons = (Area × Thickness in inches × Density) ÷ (12 × 2,000). Standard hot mix asphalt density is 145 lbs per cubic foot.

How Much Asphalt Do I Need?
Depends on your area and thickness — there's no single figure that applies to every driveway. A 1,000 sq ft driveway at 3 inches needs about 18 tons; a 2,000 sq ft area at 2 inches needs a little over 24 tons.

Standard driveway: 1,000 sq ft, 3 inches thick, standard density. (1,000 × 3 × 145) ÷ 24,000 ≈ 18.1 tons.
Larger area, thinner layer: 2,000 sq ft, 2 inches thick, 5% waste. Base = (2,000 × 2 × 145) ÷ 24,000 ≈ 24.17 tons. With 5% waste ≈ 25.38 tons.
Common Residential Asphalt Thicknesses
2-3 inches compacted for standard passenger-vehicle driveways, and 4-6 inches for driveways that regularly carry trucks, RVs, or heavy equipment.
Common Asphalt Measurement Mistakes
Using an uncompacted thickness figure instead of the target compacted thickness — asphalt compacts significantly during rolling. Applying a single density figure without checking your specific mix design, since real mixes range roughly 140-150 lbs/ft³. Skipping the waste allowance, which covers rolling loss and irregular edge trimming.

(1,000 × 3 × 145) ÷ (12 × 2,000) ≈ 18.1 tons. With 10% waste: about 19.9 tons.
