How Bowling Handicap Works
A handicap levels the playing field between bowlers of different skill by adding pins to a lower-average bowler's score. It's based on the gap between your average and a league's "basis" average — the target average the league is scoring against.
How to Calculate Bowling Handicap
Handicap = (Basis Average − Your Average) × Percentage, capped at a minimum of 0 (better-than-basis bowlers get no handicap).
Bowling Handicap Formula
- Difference = Basis Average − Your Average
- Handicap = MAX(0, Difference × Percentage)
What Handicap Percentage Should I Use?
80% is the most common percentage used in recreational and league bowling, though some leagues use 90% or 100% for more aggressive equalizing. Check your specific league's rules — this is a league-level setting, not a universal standard.
Bowling Handicap Examples
Standard league setup: Basis 220, your average 150, 80% factor. Handicap = (220 − 150) × 0.8 = 56 pins added per game.
Higher-average bowler: Basis 220, your average 195, 80% factor. Handicap = (220 − 195) × 0.8 = 20 pins added per game.
Common Bowling Handicap Mistakes
Using your average from too few games — most leagues require a minimum number of games (often 9-21) before your average is considered established for handicap purposes. Applying the wrong basis average — this is set by your specific league, not a universal number. Forgetting the handicap is capped at 0 — a bowler with an average above the basis gets no handicap, not a negative one.
How to Use This Calculator
Enter your bowling average, your league's basis score (commonly 220), and your league's handicap percentage (commonly 80% or 90%).
Formula & Methodology
Handicap = (Basis Score − Average) × Percentage. If your average is at or above the basis score, your handicap is 0.
Example: average 150, basis 220, 80%
(220 − 150) × 0.80 = 56 pins of handicap per game.
League rules vary — some leagues use a maximum handicap cap, different rounding rules, or calculate handicap per series rather than per game. Check your specific league's rules for any adjustments to this standard formula.
