How Running Pace Is Calculated
Pace is your average time per unit distance — minutes per mile or per kilometer — calculated from your total distance and total time.
How to Calculate Running Pace
Pace = Total Time ÷ Total Distance.
Running Pace Formula
- Pace (min/mile or min/km) = Total Time ÷ Total Distance
What's a Good Running Pace?
There's no single answer — it depends entirely on your fitness level, the distance, and your goals. Comparing your own pace over time is more useful than comparing to a generic benchmark.
Running Pace Examples
5K race: 3.1 miles in 28 minutes. Pace = 28 ÷ 3.1 ≈ 9.03 minutes per mile.
Common Running Pace Mistakes
Confusing pace (time per distance) with speed (distance per time) — they're inverses of each other, and mixing them up leads to confusing results. Calculating pace over a route that included stops or breaks without accounting for them, which understates your actual moving pace. Comparing paces across very different terrain or elevation without adjusting expectations — flat and hilly routes at the "same" pace represent very different efforts.
How to Use This Calculator
Enter the total distance you ran and your total time in minutes.
Formula & Methodology
Pace = Total Time ÷ Distance. This gives your average minutes per mile across the full distance entered.
Example: 3.1 miles (a 5K) in 28 minutes
28 ÷ 3.1 ≈ 9.03 minutes per mile.
This calculates a single average pace over the whole distance entered — it doesn't break down pace by individual mile or account for elevation, terrain, or pacing strategy.

Frequently Asked Questions
- How is running pace calculated?
- Pace = total time ÷ total distance, giving your average minutes per mile (or per unit you entered distance in).
- Does this show pace per mile or per kilometer?
- Whatever unit you enter your distance in — enter distance in miles for a per-mile pace, or convert to kilometers first for a per-km pace.
- Does this account for splits or pacing strategy?
- No — this is a single average pace across your whole run, not a mile-by-mile breakdown.
