How VDOT Running Works

VDOT is a training metric developed by exercise physiologist Jack Daniels that estimates your current running fitness from a recent race performance, then uses that fitness level to suggest equivalent times at other distances and appropriate training paces.

How to Calculate Your VDOT

VDOT is derived from a recent race time and distance, using a formula that relates race pace to an estimated aerobic capacity (VO2). A faster time relative to distance produces a higher VDOT.

What Does My VDOT Number Mean?

VDOT is a relative fitness scale, not a direct physiological measurement you could otherwise obtain without lab testing — higher numbers indicate better current running fitness. It's most useful for comparing your own fitness over time and predicting realistic race times at distances you haven't recently raced.

Common VDOT Misconceptions

Treating VDOT as a fixed, permanent number — it reflects your current fitness from a recent race and changes as your training and fitness change. Using an old or poorly-paced race result to calculate VDOT — the estimate is only as good as the race effort it's based on. Expecting VDOT-predicted times to be exact — they're a well-researched estimate based on physiological relationships observed across many runners, not a guarantee for any individual.

How to Use This Calculator

Formula & Methodology

Uses the Daniels-Gilbert VDOT formula: velocity is derived from your distance and time, then converted to oxygen cost (VO2) and percentage of VO2max sustained for that duration, using the published Daniels-Gilbert regression equations. VDOT = VO2 ÷ %VO2max.

Example: 5000m in 22 minutes

Example: a 5K (5 kilometers) run in 25 minutes gives a VDOT of about 38.3 — the same result whether you enter it as 5 km, 5000 m, or 3.10686 miles.

VDOT is most accurate for race efforts (not easy training runs) at distances between roughly 1500m and the marathon. Results for very short sprints or ultra-distances fall outside the formula's original validation range.
