Cost per mile combines all your vehicle operating costs — fuel, maintenance, insurance, and any other recurring costs — divided by miles driven over the same period.
How to Calculate Cost Per Mile
Cost Per Mile = Total Costs ÷ Total Miles Driven.

What Should I Include in Total Costs?
Fuel, routine maintenance (oil changes, tires), insurance, and any other recurring costs specific to your situation (parking, tolls). Some more detailed analyses also amortize depreciation and financing costs into a "true" cost per mile, though this calculator focuses on direct operating costs.
Cost Per Mile Examples
$200 fuel + $50 maintenance + $100 insurance over 1,000 miles: Cost per mile = $350 ÷ 1,000 = $0.35.

Only including fuel costs and omitting maintenance and insurance, which understates your true operating cost. Using a short measurement period that doesn't capture periodic costs like annual insurance or infrequent maintenance. Not accounting for depreciation separately if you're comparing true total cost of ownership rather than just operating costs.

Formula & Methodology
Total annual cost (fuel + insurance + maintenance + loan payments + other costs) divided by annual miles driven.
Example: $2,000 fuel, $1,400 insurance, $800 maintenance, $5,400 loan payments, 12,000 miles/year
Total annual cost = $2,000 + $1,400 + $800 + $5,400 = $9,600. Cost per mile = $9,600 ÷ 12,000 = $0.80/mile.
Does not include depreciation unless you add it manually to 'other costs' — depreciation is a real ownership cost but is calculated separately since it depends on resale timing, not annual spending.
