How Bell Curve (Z-Score) Grading Works

Bell curve grading adjusts scores based on how far each score falls from the class average, measured in standard deviations (a z-score), rather than adding a flat number of points to everyone.

How to Calculate a Bell-Curve-Adjusted Grade

Z-Score = (Your Score − Class Average) ÷ Class Standard Deviation. This z-score is then used to place your performance relative to the rest of the class distribution.

How Is This Different From a Flat-Point Curve?

A flat-point curve adds the same number of points to everyone, regardless of the score distribution. A bell curve/z-score approach instead measures relative standing within the class — a score well above a low class average could translate to a very different outcome than the same raw score against a high class average.

Bell Curve Grading Examples

A score exactly at the class average produces a z-score of 0 (the middle of the distribution). A score one standard deviation above average produces a z-score of +1.

Formula & Methodology

This uses z-score scaling: first convert the raw score to a z-score relative to the class's actual mean and standard deviation, then map that z-score onto the target mean and standard deviation.

Example: raw score 78, class average 70, class SD 8, target average 75, target SD 10

z = (78 − 70) / 8 = 1.0. Curved score = 75 + 1.0 × 10 = 85.

This method assumes scores are roughly normally distributed. It can produce curved scores above 100 or below 0 for extreme raw scores — most instructors cap results at the maximum possible score.
