How to Calculate Your IU Cumulative GPA

What Grades Count Toward IU's GPA?
Only courses graded A+ through D− and F count toward GPA — Pass/Satisfactory (P/S), Withdrawn (W), and Incomplete (I) grades are excluded per IU's official Academic Policy ACA-66.

Common IU GPA Calculation Mistakes
Assuming A+ counts for more than A — IU assigns both the same 4.0 value. Including P/S, W, or I grades in the grade-point calculation, when IU's official policy excludes them from GPA. Relying on this estimate instead of your official transcript from the IU Office of the Registrar for anything requiring a precise, official figure.

Formula & Methodology
Indiana University calculates GPA as total grade points divided by total GPA credit hours, using the official scale: A+/A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B− = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C− = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, D− = 0.7, F = 0.0 (A+ does not exceed A). New Cumulative GPA = (Current GPA × Current Credits + New Grade Points) / (Current Credits + New Credits).
Example: 3.5 GPA on 45 credits, plus a new semester earning 54 grade points on 15 credits
(3.5 × 45 + 54) / (45 + 15) = 211.5 / 60 = 3.53.
Only courses graded A+ through D− and F count toward IU's GPA — Pass/Satisfactory (P/S), Withdrawn (W), and Incomplete (I) grades are excluded and should not be included in your grade points or credits entered here.
