How MapleStory Damage Works
MapleStory uses a multiplicative damage formula that combines several stat categories. Understanding each component lets you identify which upgrades give the highest return.
The MapleStory Damage Formula
Damage = (Stat × Skill Multiplier) × (1 + %Damage) × (1 + %Boss Damage) × (1 + %Final Damage) × (1 − Effective DEF)
Where: - Stat = Primary stat contribution from attack range - %Damage = Additive bonus from %Damage lines on gear - %Boss Damage = Additional multiplier vs. bosses - %Final Damage = Applies after all other modifiers (extremely powerful) - Effective DEF = Remaining DEF after IED (Ignore Enemy DEF)
Damage Range Explained
Your character screen shows a Damage Range (e.g., 1,500,000 ~ 1,800,000). This represents: - Minimum damage — base hit when not critical - Maximum damage — base hit at maximum variance - Critical hits multiply the final damage by your Critical Damage modifier

Key Damage Stats
How Effective DEF Is Calculated
Bosses in MapleStory have DEF percentages (typically 300%). IED sources stack multiplicatively:
Remaining DEF = (1 − IED₁) × (1 − IED₂) × (1 − IED₃) × ...
Example: 50% IED + 40% IED + 20% IED: - Remaining = (1 − 0.5) × (1 − 0.4) × (1 − 0.2) = 0.5 × 0.6 × 0.8 = 0.24 - Effective IED = 76% (not 110%)
At 300% boss DEF, having 90%+ effective IED keeps remaining DEF impact minimal.

- Main/sub-stat values — STR, DEX, INT, or LUK
- Attack (ATK/MATT) — from weapon and gear
- %Damage, %Boss Damage — total from all sources

Output Interpretation
- Damage Range — min to max per hit before crit
- Average Damage — expected average per hit including crit rate
- Effective DPS — theoretical DPS based on skill rotation and attack speed
- Boss Effective Damage — applies boss DEF reduction
Upgrade Priority Analysis
The calculator helps answer: "Which upgrade gives more damage — 10% Boss Damage or 10% Critical Damage?"
The answer depends on your current stats. Multiplicative stacking means the rarest modifiers are most valuable: - If you have 300% Boss Damage already, additional Boss % has high diminishing returns - If you have 0% Final Damage, even 5% Final Damage is enormously impactful
