What Is MapleStory Cubing?

Cubing is the process of using special items called Cubes to reroll the Potential stats on equipment in MapleStory. Every piece of equipment can have Potential — hidden bonus stats revealed when you unlock the item. Potential comes in four tiers:

TierColorKey Stats
RareBlueMinor stat boosts
EpicPurple%STR, %DEX, %INT, %LUK, %ATT
UniqueYellowAll-Stat, %ATT, Cooldown Reduction
LegendaryRed%Damage, %Boss Damage, %IED, %ATT, %Crit Damage

Legendary is the highest tier and provides the best bonus stats critical for end-game progression.

Types of Cubes

CubeFunction
Occult CubeRare → Epic; rerolls lines at current tier
Master Craftsman's CubeRerolls Epic or higher; can tier up
Meister's CubeRerolls Unique or higher; can tier up
Black CubeRerolls current tier, shows before/after to choose; can tier up
Red CubeRerolls current tier; can tier up
Violet CubeNew cube variant with modified probabilities

Black and Red Cubes from the Cash Shop are the primary cubing tools for serious progression.

Tier-Up Probability

The probability of tiering up each cube use (approximate, GMS figures):

Current Tier → NextRed/Black Cube
Rare → Epic~10%
Epic → Unique~2%
Unique → Legendary~1%

This means statistically: - ~10 cubes to go from Rare → Epic - ~50 cubes to go from Epic → Unique - ~100 cubes to go from Unique → Legendary

These are averages — actual results vary widely due to RNG. Some players tier up in 10 cubes; others use 300+.

How the Cube Calculator Works

The MapleStory Cube Calculator estimates:

  1. Expected cubes per tier-up — based on official probability rates
  2. Probability distribution — likelihood of achieving tier-up within N cubes
  3. Cost estimation — at current NX (Cash) prices or meso market prices

Example Calculation

Goal: Bring a Unique weapon to Legendary using Black Cubes. - Base probability: ~1% per cube use - Expected cubes: 100 (average) - 50% chance of success by: ~69 cubes - 90% chance of success by: ~230 cubes - 99% chance of success by: ~459 cubes

The distribution follows a geometric probability model: P(success by N cubes) = 1 − (1 − p)^N

Setting Up a Calculation

  1. Select the cube type (Red, Black, Master Craftsman's, Meister's)
  2. Select the current tier of your item's potential
  3. Select the target tier
  4. The calculator outputs expected cube count, cost estimate, and success probability curves

After Reaching Legendary: Line Optimization

Once an item is Legendary, the goal is to get three good lines of stats. Prime lines (first line) have higher probability of desirable stats:

StatWhy It's Valued
%Boss DamageDirect damage multiplier vs bosses
%Ignore Enemy DEF (IED)Required to bypass boss defense
%ATT/%MATTAdds to all damage
%Crit DamageMultiplies damage on critical hits
Cooldown ReductionLowers ability cooldowns

Getting 3 lines of boss damage or IED on a single item is extremely rare — budget accordingly for extended cubing sessions.

Cost Planning

Black Cubes typically cost 1,200–2,200 NX each (varies by region/sale events). For a budget estimate: - Unique → Legendary: expect 100 cubes average = 120,000–220,000 NX - With bad RNG (90th percentile): ~230 cubes = 276,000–506,000 NX

Purchase cubes during sales events (typically 10–20% off) to reduce long-term cubing costs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the probability of getting Legendary potential in MapleStory?
The approximate probability per cube use to tier up from Unique to Legendary is ~1% with Red and Black Cubes. This means on average it takes about 100 cube uses to tier up, but results follow a geometric distribution — there is no guarantee. You have roughly a 50% chance of success by 69 cubes, a 90% chance by ~230 cubes, and a 99% chance by ~459 cubes. Actual rates may differ between GMS and KMS and across cube types.
What is the difference between Red Cube and Black Cube in MapleStory?
Both Red and Black Cubes can reroll and tier up Potential. The key difference is that Black Cubes show you the new potential lines before you commit — you can compare the new roll to the current roll and keep whichever you prefer. Red Cubes apply the new roll immediately. Black Cubes are strictly better for item optimization but are more expensive. Both have similar tier-up probabilities.
How many cubes should I budget for getting Legendary potential?
For the Unique → Legendary transition with a ~1% probability, budget at minimum 100 cubes for an average-luck run. For a 90% probability of success (i.e., you're likely to succeed), budget ~230 cubes. For safety with poor RNG, budget 300–500 cubes. For cost efficiency, only cube during NX sales events and consider using Master Craftsman's Cubes (cheaper) for earlier Epic → Unique transitions.
What stats should I look for at Legendary potential?
The most valuable Legendary Potential lines depend on your class and build. For most DPS classes: %Boss Damage, %Ignore Enemy DEF (IED), %ATT or %MATT (attack), and %Crit Damage are top priority. %All-Stat lines are useful for flexibility. Cooldown Reduction (CDR) is crucial for skill-heavy classes. The best possible weapon setup is 3 lines of %Boss or 2 lines %Boss + 1 %IED or %ATT.
