Most residential exterior walls and load-bearing interior walls use 16-inch OC spacing. Non-load-bearing partition walls often use 24-inch OC to reduce cost.

The Stud Count Formula

Studs = (Wall Length in feet × 12 ÷ Stud Spacing in inches) + 1

Then add studs for special conditions: - Each corner: +3 studs (or +2 with California corner framing) - Each T-intersection with another wall: +2 studs - Each door opening: +3–4 studs (king studs, jack studs, cripple studs above) - Each window: +4–6 studs

Worked Example: 20 ft Wall, 16-Inch OC, One Door

Calculation: 1. Base studs: (20 × 12 ÷ 16) + 1 = (15) + 1 = 16 studs 2. But subtract 1 stud where the door centerline falls (the door opening displaces 2 studs, adds jack + king = replaces them differently) 3. Add for door frame: 2 king studs + 2 jack studs + 3 cripples above door = 7 additional pieces 4. Corners (if wall connects at one end): +3 studs

Approximate total for this wall: ~24 studs + plates

Simplified industry rule: 1 stud per linear foot + 10% waste = for a 20 ft wall, order 22 studs. This rule accounts for corners, waste, and extras without calculating each individually.

Top and Bottom Plates

Each wall requires: - 1 bottom plate (running the full length) - 2 top plates (doubled top plate) or 1 for non-load-bearing

Plate material needed = Wall Length × 3 (for double top plate + bottom plate)

For 20 ft wall: 20 × 3 = 60 linear feet of 2×4 (or 2×6 for 2×6 walls)

What is 16-inch on-center stud spacing?
16 inches OC means the center of each stud is 16 inches from the center of the adjacent stud. This is the most common residential framing spacing. It allows standard 4×8 and 4×12 sheet goods to terminate at stud centers (48 in ÷ 3 = 16 in). 24-inch OC uses 1/3 fewer studs and is acceptable for many non-load-bearing applications.
How many extra studs should I order for waste?
Add 10–15% to your calculated stud count. Waste from cuts, miscuts, twisted or bowed lumber, and in-field adjustments is unavoidable. For a large framing project, 12% is a common waste factor. It's cheaper to have extras than to make additional lumber runs mid-project.
What length studs do I need for 8-foot ceilings?
92-5/8 inch precut studs for 8-foot finished ceiling height. This accounts for the bottom plate (1.5 in) plus two top plates (2 × 1.5 in = 3 in), totaling 4.5 inches of plate thickness, leaving 92.625 in = 7.72 ft stud height — which gives an 8-foot finished ceiling when drywall is applied.
