How to Measure for Wall Framing

How Many Studs Do I Need?
It depends on wall length, spacing, and how many corners and openings the wall has — there's no fixed number per linear foot. A simple straight wall needs far fewer studs than one with several doors, windows, or corners.
Stud Measurement Examples
Simple straight wall: 12 ft wall, 16" OC, 1 corner, 1 door, 10% waste. Common studs = floor(144÷16)+1 = 10. Plus 3 (corner) + 4 (opening) = 17. With 10% waste: 19 studs.
Longer wall, wider spacing: 16 ft wall, 24" OC, 2 corners, 2 openings, 12% waste. Common studs = floor(192÷24)+1 = 9. Plus 6 (corners) + 8 (openings) = 23. With 12% waste: 26 studs.
Common Stud Framing Mistakes
Forgetting cripple studs (the short studs above and below window openings) and top/bottom plates — this calculator counts vertical wall studs only, not the full framing package. Using 16" spacing assumptions for a wall actually framed at 24" OC, or vice versa. Not verifying local code requirements for load-bearing walls, wide openings, or header sizing, which can require additional jack studs beyond the standard count used here.
