Why Calculate 1RM Without Testing It
Maximal singles (attempting true 1RM) carry injury risk, require heavy spotting, and cause significant fatigue. Estimating 1RM from a submaximal set (e.g., 5 reps at 85% effort) lets you:
- Program percentage-based training without risking injury at true max
- Track progress across training cycles without maxing out
- Set training zones for different rep ranges
Estimated 1RM is most accurate for reps in the 3–8 range. At 10+ reps, prediction error increases because the relationship between strength and endurance becomes individual-specific.
The Major 1RM Prediction Formulas
All formulas use: weight lifted and number of reps completed
Epley Formula (1985): 1RM = weight × (1 + reps ÷ 30)
Brzycki Formula (1993): 1RM = weight × 36 ÷ (37 − reps)
Lander Formula: 1RM = (100 × weight) ÷ (101.3 − 2.67123 × reps)
Lombardi Formula: 1RM = weight × reps^0.10
Mayhew et al. Formula: 1RM = (100 × weight) ÷ (52.2 + 41.9 × e^(−0.055 × reps))

The range between formulas (208–216 lbs) reflects prediction uncertainty. Using the average or the most conservative formula for programming is safer.
Accuracy by Rep Range
For programming purposes, use sets in the 3–6 rep range to estimate 1RM. Use reps-to-failure only — stopping several reps short of failure underestimates 1RM.
Using 1RM for Percentage-Based Programming
Most strength and powerlifting programs prescribe work in percentages of 1RM:
Example: If your estimated squat 1RM is 300 lbs: - 70% work set = 210 lbs - 80% top set = 240 lbs - 85% heavy single = 255 lbs
When to Test 1RM Directly
Estimated 1RM is useful for programming but can accumulate error over time. Test true 1RM:
- At the end of a training cycle (every 8–16 weeks)
- Before a powerlifting meet
- When estimated 1RM doesn't match performance (actual lift significantly higher or lower)
1RM testing protocol: Warm up thoroughly, make 3–5 progressively heavier singles with full recovery, attempt maximum with experienced spotter. Don't attempt without a spotter or power rack.
