How to Use This Calculator

Choose nitrate (NO3) or phosphate (PO4), then enter your actual system water volume. For a one-time correction, enter the current concentration and desired target. To estimate ongoing consumption, enter a starting measurement, an ending measurement, and the number of days between tests. Finally, enter your supplement's reference dose: how many milliliters raise the selected nutrient by a known ppm amount in a known water volume. The calculator returns the estimated correction dose and a separate daily maintenance dose.

Formula & Methodology

The one-time correction is based on the difference between the target nutrient concentration and the current concentration. Daily consumption is calculated as (Starting Measurement − Ending Measurement) ÷ Days Measured when the nutrient level declines during the measurement period. The supplement conversion is based on the product or DIY solution information entered by the user: Reference Dose ÷ Reference Increase, adjusted for the aquarium's actual water volume. Correction Dose = Required Increase × Dose per ppm at System Volume. Daily Maintenance Dose = Measured Daily Consumption × Dose per ppm at System Volume.

Example: Raising Nitrate from 2 ppm to 5 ppm

Suppose a 200-liter reef aquarium has nitrate at 2 ppm and the desired target is 5 ppm. The required correction is 3 ppm. If a supplement label states that 10 ml raises nitrate by 1 ppm in 100 liters, the same 1 ppm increase requires 20 ml in a 200-liter system. A 3 ppm correction therefore estimates 60 ml total. That amount is a one-time correction estimate, not automatically a daily dose. If nitrate later falls from 5 ppm to 4.4 ppm over 3 days, measured consumption is 0.2 ppm per day and the corresponding estimated maintenance dose is 4 ml per day using the same supplement strength.

This calculator relies entirely on the accuracy of the aquarium volume, test results, and supplement concentration entered by the user. Nutrient concentrations may change because of feeding, livestock, algae growth, bacterial activity, filtration, refugia, water changes, dosing, test variability, and other biological processes. A measured decline over one period may not represent future consumption. Product concentrations and DIY formulations differ substantially, so the calculator does not assume a universal nitrate or phosphate solution strength. It also does not determine whether increasing nitrate or phosphate is appropriate for a particular aquarium.

The calculator treats measured consumption as zero when the ending concentration is higher than the starting concentration. An increasing nutrient level indicates net accumulation rather than measurable consumption during that period.
Does this calculator recommend an ideal nitrate or phosphate level?
No. It performs dosing math based on the values you enter. Appropriate nutrient concentrations depend on the aquarium, livestock, husbandry method, and other factors.
