Running pace is expressed as time per mile (or per kilometer) — the inverse of speed. A faster runner has a lower number (less time per mile).

Pace (min/mile) = Time ÷ Distance Speed (mph) = Distance ÷ Time (in hours)

The relationship: Pace (min/mile) = 60 ÷ Speed (mph)

Accounting for Slowing in Longer Races

In reality, pace slows as race distance increases. The Riegel formula predicts performance at new distances:

T2 = T1 × (D2/D1)^1.06

Where T1 is a known race time at distance D1, and T2 is the predicted time at D2.

Example: 5K in 25:00, predicting marathon time: - D2/D1 = 42.195 km ÷ 5 km = 8.439 - T2 = 25 × (8.439)^1.06 = 25 × 9.56 = 239 min = 3:59:00 marathon

Negative Splits: Optimal Race Strategy

Running the second half faster than the first is called "negative splits." Most personal records are set with even or slightly negative splits.

Why: Glycogen depletion and fatigue accelerate in the final portions of a race. Running the first half conservatively allows you to maintain or increase pace when it matters.

Target: For a 4:00 marathon, ideal splits are 2:00 first half / 2:00 second half, or even 2:02 / 1:58 (slightly negative).
