How to Measure for Soffit
Soffit is the finished underside of your roof's overhang — the horizontal surface running between the outer edge of the fascia board and the side of the house. To measure how much you need, you're really measuring two things: the total length the soffit runs along your roofline (the perimeter), and how deep the overhang is (the soffit width).
What you need: a tape measure (a long one, or a measuring wheel for larger homes), a notepad or your phone to record each wall's length as you go, and a ladder if you want to confirm the overhang depth directly rather than estimating it from the attic.
Step 1: Measure the building's perimeter. For a simple rectangular building, that's the distance around all four exterior walls. For an L-shaped or more complex footprint, measure each rectangular section separately and add them together.
Step 2: Measure the soffit width. This is the horizontal distance the roof extends past the wall — from the side of the house to the outer edge of the fascia. It's easiest to measure from inside the attic, where you can see the rafter tails extending past the wall line, or from a ladder outside if the eave is accessible.
Step 3: Multiply and add a waste allowance. Perimeter × soffit width gives the raw area; adding 10-20% on top accounts for cuts, corners, and offcuts.
Picture the cross-section of your roof edge: the wall goes straight up, the fascia board caps the end of the rafters, and the soffit is the flat panel connecting the two horizontally — like a shelf closing off the underside of the triangle formed by the rafter tails.
How to Calculate Soffit Area
Soffit area is a simple multiplication once you have your two measurements:
Soffit Area = Perimeter × Soffit Width
Because soffit runs continuously around the building rather than being measured wall-by-wall, using the full perimeter in one calculation (rather than adding up separate wall-by-wall areas) is both faster and less error-prone.

How Much Soffit Do I Need?
The honest answer is: it depends entirely on your building's perimeter and overhang depth — there's no fixed number that applies to every home. A small, simple rectangular garage might need well under 100 sq ft, while a large house with a wide overhang can need 400+ sq ft. How Much Extra Soffit Should I Buy?
Beyond the waste allowance already built into the total above, most installers also round up to the nearest full panel, since soffit is sold in fixed-length pieces (commonly 12 ft lengths). If your calculated total lands just over a clean multiple of your panel length, it's often worth rounding up to the next full panel rather than trying to piece together a short offcut for the last section.

Common Soffit Sizes
Residential soffit width most commonly falls between 12 and 24 inches, with 16-18 inches being typical for many standard eave designs. Panels themselves are commonly sold in 12 ft lengths, in both solid and vented styles. Older homes and custom roof designs can fall outside this typical range, so always measure your actual overhang rather than assuming a standard size.
Vented vs. Solid Soffit
Beyond quantity, decide whether you need vented soffit (perforated panels that allow attic airflow) or solid soffit (no perforation) before ordering — many roofs use a mix of both, with vented sections concentrated where the attic needs the most airflow. This doesn't change how you measure the area, but it does affect what you order once you know the total square footage.
Soffit Measurement Examples
Small rectangular garage: 24 ft × 24 ft building, 1 ft soffit width. Perimeter = 2 × (24+24) = 96 ft. Area = 96 × 1 = 96 sq ft. With 10% waste: about 106 sq ft.
Mid-size home: 40 ft × 20 ft building, 2 ft soffit width. Perimeter = 2 × (40+20) = 120 ft. Area = 120 × 2 = 240 sq ft. With 10% waste: 264 sq ft.
Larger home with a wider overhang: 60 ft × 35 ft building, 2 ft soffit width, 15% waste for a more complex roofline. Perimeter = 2 × (60+35) = 190 ft. Area = 190 × 2 = 380 sq ft. With 15% waste: 437 sq ft.
Common Soffit Measurement Mistakes
Forgetting that the perimeter formula already accounts for all four corners, and double-counting corner overlap separately. Measuring along the roof's slope instead of the horizontal overhang distance — soffit width is a horizontal measurement, not one taken along the angled roof surface. Skipping the waste allowance on the assumption that a simple rectangular job won't lose any material to cuts. Treating dormers, bay windows, or roof breaks as part of the main rectangle instead of measuring their added perimeter and overhang separately.
Example: 40ft x 20ft building, 2ft soffit
Perimeter = (2*40)+(2*20) = 120 ft. Soffit area = 120 * 2 = 240 sq ft. With 10% waste: 264 sq ft.
