Grade Curve Examples
Raw score 78, +5 point curve, max 100: Curved score = MIN(83, 100) = 83.
Raw score 97, same +5 curve: Curved score = MIN(102, 100) = 100 (capped, not 102).
Common Grade Curving Misconceptions
Assuming every curve method adds the same flat number of points — percentage-based and bell-curve methods work completely differently. Assuming a curve can push a score above the maximum — it's capped at the maximum possible score. Formula & Methodology
This applies a flat-point curve: Curved Score = Raw Score + Curve Amount, capped so it never exceeds the maximum possible score.
Example: raw score 78, +5 point curve, max score 100
78 + 5 = 83 (below the 100-point cap, so no capping applies). A raw score of 97 with the same +5 curve would be capped at 100, not 102.
This implements a flat-point curve only (add the same number of points to every score) — it does not implement percentage-based curves, bell-curve/z-score curving, or any specific school or institution's grading policy. Check with your instructor which curving method actually applies to your grade.
