How to Read Your SURF for Promotion Dates

Use official personnel data carefully when locating promotion-related dates, and know when to ask your CSS or MPF for help.

Use an official, current record

A SURF or equivalent personnel product may display grade, Date of Rank, service dates, and other career information. Interfaces and field names can change.

Fields relevant to a BTZ estimate

You need the official service-entry date used for promotion purposes and the official A1C Date of Rank. Copy the dates exactly into the USAF BTZ Calculator.

Protect personal information

Do not upload a full personnel product to a public website. Enter only the minimum dates required. Avoid sharing names, Social Security numbers, DoD IDs, unit rosters, or other sensitive information.

Ask when a field is unclear

If the dates conflict across systems or you are unsure which service date applies, ask your CSS or servicing MPF.
