Using a Drop Rate Calculator

A drop rate probability calculator uses the geometric distribution to answer key questions about OSRS drops.

The core formula: P(at least 1 drop in N kills) = 1 − (1 − 1/D)^N

Where D = the drop rate denominator (e.g., 512 for a 1/512 item)

Key Calculations to Know

1. Probability at Your Current Kill Count

P(N kills, rate 1/D) = 1 − (1 − 1/D)^N

Kills (N)1/100 Rate1/512 Rate1/5,000 Rate
10063.4%18.1%2.0%
50099.3%62.4%9.5%
1,000>99.9%86.1%18.1%
5,000>99.9%>99.9%63.2%
10,00086.5%

2. Kills Needed for a Target Probability

Rearranging the formula: N = log(1 − P) ÷ log(1 − 1/D)

For a 50% chance (median): N_50% ≈ 0.693 × D (where 0.693 = ln(2))

3. How Dry Are You?

Use this percentile table to understand where you fall:

If you've done D kills (the expected amount): - 36.8% of players haven't gotten the drop yet (being 1× dry is very common) - 13.5% haven't gotten it at 2D kills - 5.0% haven't gotten it at 3D kills

To check: What percentile are you in after N kills without a drop? Percentile = (1 − P(N)) × 100 = (1 − 1/D)^N × 100

Multiple Drops: The Binomial Distribution

If you want exactly K drops in N kills:

P(exactly K drops) = C(N,K) × (1/D)^K × (1 − 1/D)^(N−K)

For most OSRS players, the relevant question is "at least 1 drop" (K ≥ 1), handled by the simpler formula above.

Pet Drop Rates and Extremely Rare Items

Pet rates and Jad-ring equivalent items at 1/5,000 to 1/65,000 require enormous kill counts:

Pet RateKills for 50% ChanceExpected Kills
1/1,0006931,000
1/5,0003,4665,000
1/10,0006,93110,000
1/65,53645,42665,536

For extremely rare pets: Many top-level players have 10,000+ boss kills without a pet. At 1/5,000 pet rate, a player with 10,000 kills has an 86.5% chance of having received the pet — meaning 13.5% of that population is still dry at 10,000 kills.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate my odds at any kill count?
P(at least one drop in N kills) = 1 − (1 − 1/D)^N. For 500 kills at 1/512: P = 1 − (511/512)^500 = 1 − 0.377 = 62.3%. Use a calculator with the exponent function, or use an online OSRS drop rate calculator.
How many kills do I need for a 99% chance at a drop?
N = log(0.01) ÷ log(1 − 1/D) ≈ 4.605 × D. For a 1/512 item: 4.605 × 512 ≈ 2,358 kills for 99% chance. For 1/5,000: ~23,026 kills for 99% chance.
What kill count gives me 50% chance?
N_50% ≈ 0.693 × D. For a 1/512 drop: 0.693 × 512 ≈ 355 kills for 50% probability. Half of all players will have gotten the drop by kill 355, and half will still be waiting.
How do I know how dry I actually am?
Calculate what percentage of players would still be waiting at your kill count: Percentile dry = (1 − 1/D)^N × 100. At 1,000 kills without a 1/512 item: (511/512)^1000 × 100 = 13.9% — you're in the driest 13.9% of players grinding that item.
