The OSRS Level Formula

OSRS uses a formula based on the original RuneScape formula. For levels 1–99:

XP(level) = floor(Σ from n=1 to level-1 of floor(n + 300 × 2^(n/7)) / 4)

This formula creates a geometric scaling where each level requires progressively more XP than the previous level.

XP Requirements: Key Milestones

LevelTotal XP RequiredXP from Previous Level
10
101,154~100–130/level
204,470~300–400/level
3013,363~800–1,200/level
4037,224~3,000–4,000/level
50101,333~10,000+/level
60273,742~25,000+/level
70737,627~75,000+/level
801,986,068~175,000+/level
905,346,332~550,000+/level
926,517,253~600,000/level
9913,034,431~2,101,178/level (98→99)

Level 92 is exactly halfway to 99 in XP — requiring 6,517,253 XP out of the 13,034,431 total needed.

Why XP Scaling Is Exponential

The ×2^(n/7) term in the formula causes each 7-level increase to approximately double the XP-per-level requirement. This means:

  • Levels 1–50: Relatively accessible with most methods
  • Levels 50–70: Moderate grind begins
  • Levels 70–90: Significant time investment
  • Levels 90–99: The true "grind" — last 9 levels require more XP than the first 90 combined

Total XP to 99: 13,034,431 XP XP from 98 to 99 alone: 2,101,178 XP (more XP than reaching level 62 from scratch)

Virtual Levels 100–126

After level 99, XP continues to accumulate. The XP formula extends to virtual levels:

  • Level 100: 14,391,160 XP
  • Level 110: 25,395,769 XP
  • Level 120: 104,273,167 XP
  • Level 126 (combat max): ~188 million XP per skill

Virtual levels are displayed in some third-party tools (RuneLite) but don't provide stat boosts beyond 99 — they're cosmetic achievement markers.

XP Rate Optimization

Your effective "time to 99" depends heavily on XP per hour:

XP/HourHours to 99 from Level 1
50,000261 hours
100,000130 hours
200,00065 hours
500,00026 hours
1,000,00013 hours

Most skills have a spectrum from slow/AFK methods (50–100K XP/hr) to fast/intensive methods (200K–1M+ XP/hr). The best method depends on your time, budget (some fast methods are expensive), and how engaged you want to be.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much XP is level 99 in OSRS?
Level 99 requires 13,034,431 total XP. The jump from 98 to 99 alone is 2,101,178 XP — more than reaching level 62 from scratch. Level 92 is exactly halfway to 99 in XP, requiring 6,517,253 XP.
How do I calculate OSRS level from XP?
Use the formula: XP(level) = floor(Σ from n=1 to (level-1) of floor(n + 300 × 2^(n/7)) / 4). Practically, use the OSRS wiki XP table or a calculator. The formula is exponential — each level takes progressively more XP than the last.
What is halfway to 99 in OSRS XP?
Level 92 is halfway to 99 in XP — requiring exactly 6,517,253 XP out of the total 13,034,431. Many players consider reaching 92 a significant milestone. At most XP rates, going from 92 to 99 takes as long as going from 1 to 92.
What are virtual levels in OSRS?
Virtual levels are levels beyond 99 calculated using the same formula — levels 100–126. They don't provide any in-game stat boost but are tracked for prestige. Level 120 requires ~104 million XP. Some skills (Slayer, Dungeoneering equivalent in RS3) officially have level 120 in some games.
