Setting a Skill Goal in OSRS

Before starting any skill grind, having a clear goal saves time and money. A proper plan answers: How much XP do I need? How long will it take? How much will it cost?

Step 1: Calculate Your XP Gap

The XP needed to go from level A to level B is simply the difference in cumulative XP:

XP Required = Total XP at target level − Your current XP

Key milestone XP values:

LevelCumulative XP
50101,333
60273,742
70737,627
751,210,421
801,986,068
853,258,594
905,346,332
926,517,253
958,771,558
9913,034,431

Example: Going from 75 to 90 Fishing requires: 5,346,332 − 1,210,421 = 4,135,911 XP

Step 2: Estimate Time at Your XP Rate

Divide XP needed by your expected hourly rate:

Hours = XP Needed ÷ XP per Hour

XP/HourHours for 4M XPHours for 10M XP
50,00080 hours200 hours
100,00040 hours100 hours
200,00020 hours50 hours
500,0008 hours20 hours

Reality check: Always add 10–20% to account for banking, restocking, distractions, and variance in XP rate.

Step 3: Choose Your Method

Methods have trade-offs across three axes: - XP Rate: How fast you gain levels - Cost/Profit: Does it cost GP or earn GP? - Intensity: How much attention does it require?

Method TypeXP RateCostIntensity
AFKable (fishing, woodcutting relaxed)Low (50–80K/hr)Often profitableLow
Semi-AFK (some mining, crafting)Medium (100–150K/hr)VariesMedium
Active (tick manipulation, efficient methods)High (200–500K/hr)Often costlyHigh
Buyable (herblore, prayer, construction)Very High (300K–1M/hr)ExpensiveLow

Step 4: Account for Cost

For buyable skills, estimate total GP cost:

Total Cost = XP Needed × GP per XP

At 4 GP/XP for 4 million XP of Herblore: 4M × 4 = 16M GP budget needed.

Step 5: Plan Milestone Rewards

Many skills unlock useful content at specific levels: - 70 Prayer: Piety activation (requires completing additional quest) - 75 Magic: High Level Alchemy - 80 Agility: Sepulchre access - 85 Slayer: Abyssal demons - 91 RC: Blood runes at Arceuus

Targeting milestones gives intermediate goals and keeps motivation up during long grinds.

Common Planning Mistakes

Underestimating banking time: Most methods include 10–20% overhead for banking, traveling, restocking. A claimed "100K XP/hr" method might be 80K effective.

Ignoring quest requirements: Some training methods are locked behind quests. Check required quests before planning (e.g., Fairy Rings require completing part of Fairy Tale quests).

Not pricing materials first: Check Grand Exchange prices before buying materials in bulk. Prices can shift 20–30% between when you planned and when you buy.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate XP needed between OSRS levels?
Look up the cumulative XP values for both levels and subtract: XP needed = XP at target level − XP at current level. Example: level 85 to 90 requires 5,346,332 − 3,258,594 = 2,087,738 XP. The OSRS Wiki XP table has all values from 1 to 99.
What is a realistic XP rate for most skills?
Most mainstream training methods yield 80,000–200,000 XP/hr at medium effort. Budget 80K/hr for relaxed/AFK methods, 150K/hr for standard efficient methods, and 250K+/hr for tick manipulation or buyable skills. Very high-efficiency methods (400K+) exist but require intense focus.
How long does 99 in a skill take in OSRS?
From level 1, 13,034,431 XP is needed. At 100,000 XP/hr: 130 hours. At 50,000 XP/hr: 261 hours. At 200,000 XP/hr: 65 hours. In practice, 99s take 50–300+ hours depending on skill and methods chosen — mining and runecrafting are slow; prayer and construction are fast if you can spend the GP.
Should I use AFK or efficient methods for skill training?
Depends on your goals. If you have a time constraint, efficient high-XP/hr methods with higher attention pay off. If you prefer casual play or are watching TV while grinding, AFK methods are more sustainable. Many players use AFK methods for skills they care less about and efficient methods for skills needed for specific content.
