How to Use This Calculator
Use the deck's actual card count, including lands. Enter average mana value for nonland spells. Count only reliable early ramp and cheap draw or selection that can realistically help find mana. Treat the recommendation as a playtesting baseline.
Formula & Methodology
The recommended count starts from a format baseline, adjusts for average mana value, and applies conservative credits for reliable ramp and cheap card selection. Draw outputs use a binomial approximation: one minus the probability of drawing fewer than the target number of lands in the cards seen.
Example: a 60-card deck with an average mana value of 2.8
With a 24-land baseline, a moderately higher curve can add about one land, while a small amount of reliable ramp and cheap selection can offset part of that adjustment. The probability section then estimates land availability through the selected turn.
The recommendation is a transparent heuristic, not an official Wizards rule. It does not fully model colored-source requirements, mulligans, London mulligan bottoming choices, modal double-faced cards, landcyclers, treasures, rituals, fetchlands, tapped lands, commander-specific engines, or exact hypergeometric sampling without replacement.

- How many lands should a 60-card MTG deck have?
- Twenty-four is a common starting baseline, not a universal rule. Low curves, ramp, draw, land types, and strategy can move the final count.
- How many lands should a Commander deck have?
- Thirty-seven is a practical neutral starting point for many 100-card decks, but commanders, ramp quality, curve, and land utility can justify a different number.
- Why does the calculator only partially credit mana rocks?
- Ramp usually requires mana to cast and may be vulnerable or color-limited, so one rock is not treated as a full replacement for one land.
- Are the draw probabilities exact?
- No. They use a binomial approximation and are clearly labeled. Exact deck sampling is hypergeometric and would require a dedicated probability engine.
- Does the calculator determine colored sources?
- No. After choosing a total land count, separately verify how many sources of each color are needed for the deck's colored costs.
