How Uma Musume Racing Works

Uma Musume: Pretty Derby is a horse-girl racing game where the outcome of races depends on your Uma Musume's stats, running style, skills, and the race conditions (track, distance, ground, weather). The Race Calculator estimates performance by simulating the race model.

The Five Core Stats

StatPrimary Effect
SpeedMaximum top speed achievable
StaminaHP pool that depletes during races; affects late-race speed
PowerAcceleration rate and overtaking ability
GutsMinimum speed floor; prevents extreme slowdowns
WisdomSkill activation rate; reduces poor running position penalties

Stat Caps by Distance

Each race distance has a maximum effective stat cap. Stats above the cap still have minor benefit but the main contribution stops:

Distance ClassSpeed CapStamina Cap
Short (1,200m)~1,200~600
Mile (1,600m)~1,200~800
Middle (2,000–2,400m)~1,200~1,000
Long (2,400m+)~1,200~1,200

Stamina requirements increase with distance — a long-distance runner needs significantly more stamina than a sprinter.

Running Styles

StyleDescriptionBest Stats
Nige (Front Runner)Leads from the startSpeed, Stamina
Senko (Runner-Up)Follows just behind the leaderSpeed, Power
Sashi (Late Charge)Bursts in the final phasePower, Speed
Oikomi (Closer)Holds back until the final stretchPower, Guts

Race Phases and Speed Zones

A race is divided into three phases: 1. Opening Phase — leaving the gate; Wisdom affects positioning 2. Middle Phase — conserving stamina, maintaining position 3. Final Phase (Last Spurt) — speed burst for the final 20–25% of the race

The Last Spurt is decisive. Stamina must be above zero to trigger a full Last Spurt; if stamina runs out early, the Uma Musume slows down significantly in the final stretch.

How the Race Calculator Works

The Race Calculator estimates: 1. Stamina requirement — minimum stamina to complete Last Spurt without running out 2. Expected finish position — based on stat comparison vs. opponent pool 3. Speed during each phase — graphs speed over the course of the race 4. Skill activation probability — likelihood of key skills triggering

Using the Calculator

  1. Input your Uma Musume's five stats
  2. Select the running style
  3. Select race distance and ground type (Turf/Dirt)
  4. Select weather conditions (Good, Heavy, etc.)
  5. Review the output: stamina timeline, speed profile, and last spurt viability

Ground and Weather Conditions

ConditionEffect
Good (良)Standard; no adjustments
Slightly Heavy (稍重)Minor stamina penalty
Heavy (重)Significant stamina penalty
Bad (不良)Severe stamina penalty; power more important

Dry and Good ground conditions favor Speed. Heavy and wet conditions favor Stamina and Guts to maintain pace.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much stamina do I need for each race distance in Uma Musume?
As a rough guideline: Short races (1,200m) need roughly 600 stamina; Mile races (1,600m) need ~800; Middle distance (2,000–2,400m) needs ~1,000; Long races (2,400m+) need ~1,200. These are minimums for maintaining Last Spurt without running out. The Race Calculator can give you a precise value based on your running style, skills, and race conditions. Extra stamina beyond the cap still provides minor Last Spurt benefit via the Guts interaction.
What is Wisdom used for in Uma Musume?
Wisdom affects two things: skill activation rate (how often your skills trigger during a race) and the penalty reduction for poor starting positions. Higher Wisdom means more consistent skill use, which can be decisive in close races. Wisdom also slightly reduces the random starting-gate penalty that affects positioning in the Opening Phase. It's especially valuable for Skill-heavy builds relying on speed or healing skills to trigger frequently.
What is the difference between running styles in Uma Musume?
The four running styles determine when and how your Uma Musume accelerates. Nige (Front Runner) leads from the gate and benefits most from sustained Speed and Stamina. Senko (Runner-Up) follows just behind and needs Speed and Power for late passing. Sashi (Late Charge) and Oikomi (Closer) hold back and burst at the end — they need high Power and Speed to close the gap. Your Uma Musume's aptitude rating for each style (S/A/B/C/D/E) also affects performance.
How do track conditions affect race performance in Uma Musume?
Track condition (Good, Slightly Heavy, Heavy, Bad) affects stamina consumption and speed decay. Heavy and Bad conditions increase stamina drain throughout the race, meaning you may run out before the final stretch without sufficient stamina. All Uma Musume also have a ground aptitude rating for Turf vs. Dirt — running on the wrong ground type reduces effectiveness. Always check both the distance and ground type match your Uma Musume's best aptitudes.
