How to Measure for Fill Dirt
Fill dirt is used to raise low spots, fill holes, or grade a site before construction — it's not for planting, so don't confuse it with topsoil. Measure the length and width of the area to fill, and how deep you need to bring the level up.
For uneven ground, measure the average depth needed across the area rather than just the deepest point, or break the area into sections with more consistent depth.
How to Calculate Fill Dirt Volume
Volume (cubic feet) = Length × Width × Depth, all in feet, divided by 27 to get cubic yards — the unit fill dirt is priced and delivered in.

How Much Fill Dirt Do I Need?
This depends entirely on the size of the area and how much you need to raise it — there's no universal number. A small hole or low spot might need under a cubic yard; grading a larger section of yard before a build can need dozens of cubic yards.

Grading before a shed pad: 25 ft × 15 ft, 8 inches deep. Volume = 25 × 15 × 0.67 ≈ 250 cu ft ÷ 27 ≈ 9.26 cubic yards.
Common Fill Dirt Measurement Mistakes
Using fill dirt where topsoil was needed (or vice versa) — fill dirt has no nutrient content and won't support plant growth. Not accounting for compaction: fill dirt is typically compacted in layers for structural fill, which can require more raw material than the loose volume suggests — for anything load-bearing (a foundation, a driveway base), consult a geotechnical engineer rather than relying on this calculator alone. Measuring only the deepest point of an uneven area instead of the average depth needed.

Formula & Methodology
Volume (cubic yards) = Length × Width × Depth (in feet) ÷ 27. Weight = Volume × Density.
Example: 20 ft × 10 ft area, 6 in deep
20 × 10 × 0.5 = 100 cubic feet ÷ 27 ≈ 3.7 cubic yards.
