OSRS Attack Speed and Game Ticks: How Tick-Based Combat Works
Understand OSRS game ticks and attack speed. Every action in OSRS happens in 0.6-second tick intervals, and weapon speed determines how many ticks between attacks.

What Is a Game Tick?
OSRS runs on a server-side timing system where all game actions are processed in discrete intervals called game ticks. Each tick is 0.6 seconds long (approximately 1.667 ticks per second).
This means every attack, movement, prayer flick, and item pickup is synchronized to these 0.6-second intervals. Nothing happens "between" ticks — actions resolve at the start of each tick.
Weapon Attack Speed in Ticks
Every weapon in OSRS has an attack speed measured in game ticks — the number of ticks between consecutive attacks:
DPS Impact of Attack Speed
The Abyssal Whip (fast, 5 ticks) and Dragon Scimitar (fast, 5 ticks) attack 20 times per minute. A Zamorak Godsword (slow, 7 ticks) attacks 14.3 times per minute — 30% fewer swings.
Even with a higher max hit, slower weapons often lose DPS to faster alternatives. For melee training: - The Abyssal Whip is preferred for Slayer (fast speed + high slash bonus) - Dragon Scimitar is used for quests or when whip is unavailable - Godswords are for spec weaponry or situations requiring a crush style
Tick Manipulation: Advanced OSRS Technique
"Tick manipulation" refers to player techniques that intentionally delay or alter the server's tick processing to perform actions faster than normal. Examples:
3-Tick Woodcutting/Fishing/Mining: By interrupting actions with a specific sequence (clicking a herb and vial on the same tick you click a tree), players can force the game to recalculate activity every 3 ticks instead of every 4+, dramatically increasing XP per hour.
- Normal Woodcutting: ~45,000 XP/hr (cutting redwoods)
- 3-Tick Woodcutting: ~90,000–115,000 XP/hr (same logs)
2-Tick Chinchompa Hunting: Using chin traps and interruption cycles, experienced players achieve near-2-tick intervals on box traps, reaching 200,000+ Hunter XP/hr.
Prayer Flicking
Prayer flicking exploits the tick system to activate a prayer for a single tick (just long enough to block incoming damage) and then deactivate it — effectively getting prayer benefits with zero prayer point drain.
- Accurate flicking: 0 prayer points per hour for full protection
- Difficulty: Requires precise clicking on every single tick — very high APM
- Risk: Miss a tick and take full damage
Flicking is commonly used at Bandos GWD, Zulrah, and Pest Control for GP/hr efficiency.

Frequently Asked Questions
- How long is an OSRS game tick?
- One OSRS game tick is 0.6 seconds (or 600 milliseconds). The game processes all actions — attacks, movement, prayer, item interactions — at the start of each tick. There are approximately 1.667 ticks per second, or 100 ticks per minute.
- What is the fastest attack speed weapon in OSRS?
- The fastest attack speed is 4 ticks (2.4 seconds between attacks), equivalent to 25 attacks per minute. Weapons with this speed include daggers, claws, the abyssal dagger (special attack), and magic wands. The Toxic Blowpipe on rapid is also 3 ticks (the absolute fastest at 1.8 seconds between attacks).
- What is tick manipulation in OSRS?
- Tick manipulation is using game mechanics to force actions to reset faster than normal. For skilling, the most common form is 3-tick skilling (woodcutting, fishing, mining), which uses herb+vial or similar item interactions to interrupt and reset gathering actions every 3 ticks instead of the default 4+ ticks. This roughly doubles XP rates at the cost of intensive clicking.
- Does faster attack speed always mean better DPS?
- Not always. DPS = Hit Chance × (Max Hit / 2) / Attack Speed. A slower weapon with a much higher max hit and accuracy can out-DPS a faster weapon. Godswords (7 ticks) vs. the whip (5 ticks) — the godsword's higher max hit doesn't compensate for its 40% slower speed in most scenarios, but special attacks (with their high multipliers) favor the slower godsword.
